My very first photo of a steam engine taken when I was eleven at Southport Lancashire. The Fireman was my schoolfriends big brother, Richard Alty and he let us on the footplate and drive it. Imagine being allowed to do that today! The engine is 2-4-2 “Lanky Tank” No 50746 built in 1889 and still in use as the station pilot at Southport till1960. Sorry it’s very grainy but I found it in a box of old childhood photos when my mum died. Couldn’t find the negative though.
