Gwalia Woodline

FritzFitton

East Fremantle, Australia

Artist's Description

Many historic gold mines in Western Australia had there own railway systems known as the “Woodlines”. These lines went miles out into the surrounding bush where wood was cut to feed the boilers of the mine steam engines. I painted this picture of abandoned engine “Ken” at the famous Sons of Gwalia mine discovered in 1896. Herbert Hoover who later became president of the USA was manager there in the early days.
