great quote from English sculptor Anthony Gormley.

Watched a fantastic programme this evening, Sunday the 25th of April 2010, on ABC2 about the English sculptor, Anthony Gormely, the guy that gave the English countryside “the Angel” and the 100 cast iron copies of his own body dotted along the seaside in the north of England and recently had similar figures mounted on the top of buildings around London and New York, anyway, during the interview he said this:
" An artist doesn’t do other’s bidding, but, finds out what is worth doing and do that, completely!"
so to all those people who constantly say, (and thse people don’t paint or create anything themselves, by the way) “why don’t you paint something that pe0ple want to buy?” this quote is why I don’t paint things that match the curtains and the lounge.

Some artists I guess measure their success by how many fans they have, and will therefore give the folks what they want. Or maybe they have to make saleable art in order to feed themselves. I feel very lucky not to be in either of those situations, and can therefore please myself. I may have fewer fans, but the ones I have are the ones I prefer to have! If we can’t be ourselves, then what is the point of ‘being’??

  • yes, I am the same, really lucky that I don’t need the money to survive, I dare say that if I did need the money, then things may be different for a while , until the money situation got better, then I would please myself again.

absolutely!! on the other hand I can’t imagine that your wonderful whimsical wizard works wouldn’t whip out the gallery doors in any case. Hmmm, … 6 w’s in a row. I can add ‘wow’ to that list…. wow works :D

  • you are too kind, thank you for the kind words, but, alas, the financial situation of the buying public is in the negative for the time being, so I will have to wait a little longer for the whipping to occur…..cheers, M

I understand exactly what you mean….that we have to do what pleases us, and also that the buying public seems to be missing in action lately….they seem to be buying cards instead of framed prints….lol!

  • well I’m glad that they are at least buying something of yours!! cause they’re not purchasing anything which I have created over the last 6 months, cheers, M
