My Dad Snores by Michael Jones
Clear

Acrylic on stretched canvas 90cm x 60cm, retro caravan series,
Bill and Sheila on holiday at their favourite location, as always there is a frenzy of activity, so much so that Bill can’t study the form guide properly, so has succumbed to the afternoon nap. Bill’s son Kevin has found a new playmate and proudly proclaimed to him a newly discovered trait of his father’s.
This was a painting I did over the Easter period as a demonstration painting at the “Gallery Beneath” Mooloolaba, now that it is finished can be found at the gallery.

I never did have a caravan holiday like this, but the regular weekends at the beach I did….there’s no doubt about it, brings back lovely memories….fantastic work, Michael!

  • Thanks for looking in and the plaudits, yeah it does conjure up memories of caravan hols in the South of Wales UK, although not as much sun, sand and pandanus….heheh, :)

You have a dog in this one! Was that just for me? Lots of excellent detail as usual Michael. By the way, what’s a pandanu?

  • hehe, I will answer your last Q first, a Pandanus is a palm, I think it is a native of this country, and the dogs? well I just love painting dogs into paintings, they add so much interest. thanks Margaret, cheers, M

fab, so homely, so interesting, such a lot to keep going back and looking at, your style is wonderful and such fun…

  • hehe, thanks Linda, it supposed to take one back to the late 50’s or early 60’s when kids made their own fun with simple props. with this particular painting, as it was a demo piece at a gallery, painted over Easter, I had to put lots of different elements into it so that I could work on it over the 3 days. thanks for looking in and lovely comments, cheers, M

re above… you mean you usually take less than 3 days to work up one of these?? the gallery beneath must have quite a collection of your work… or does it zing out the door as soon as the paint dries. I wouldn’t be surprised.
btw I thought I already had you on my watch list. no wonder there was nothing coming up. cheers!! c

  • OMG, I wish, naw, this one was hell on earth! firstly it took me about three hours to prepare the canvas with gesso, then I had to draw in the main elements, then over the Easter break I took all my painting stuff down to the gallery in Mooloolaba and paint in public over the next three days, I got about two thirds of the way through it, I sort of finished a couple of the elements so that people could see some details and some of the finishing techniques, after that I took it home and it sat there staring at me yelling at me to finsh it!!! but I had another painting which I had to finish by the 13th of April which was the same size, so it was over a week later that I got back to it and I had to re-create the same feeling in my brain so that I could carry on, 5 days later I was varnishing it. and voila! I wish they WERE flying off the wall, but I am a patient man. A good friend of mine always said to me, " Michael, It doesn’t matter if your paintings aren’t selling, just keep on painting and put them under the bed, cause it is like printing money!" cheers for the visit and lovely words.
