These images are from a short photography course undertaken by 12 young people at Centro Juventude in Suai, Timor-Leste. Suai is a town near the Western border of Timor-Leste, one of the world’s youngest democracies. They paint a portrait of the township, its people, animals, market, church and streets. The photos were shown at Timor-Leste’s 2009 Independence Day celebrations in an exhibition entitled “Labarik Mak Futuru Nasaun Timor-Leste” (Children are the Future of Timor-Leste).

They were also presented by the students at the Suai markets on market day under the title “Hosi Laran ba Laran” (From Heart to Heart). A selection of the students’ photos was exhibited at the Nation-Building in Urban and Rural Timor-Leste Conference in Dili, July 7-10th. The course was developed and taught by Richard Jones, with Afreo Sanches, senior artist and translator from Arte Moris. It was funded by the City of Port Phillip’s Friends of Suai in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
