Phillip…..as a mother, (and one of my son’s was in the Australian army for 20 years…technical…cartographer) I look at this image and wonder about their Mum’s. I never had to worry about my boy…I can only hazard a guess at what they must go through knowing the danger their boys face every day. This is such an amazing shot….their exhaustion is so apparent. I wonder how a body can maintain itself with all the clobber they have to carry in all that heat. I hope the term ‘boy’ doesn’t offend you…but to mum’s that’s what you are…our boys :-)
    God bless you.

The thing i love so much about this image is that it reflects any war at any time, all that gives it away is the modern uniform otherwise they could just as easily be in the 1st or 2nd World War. Fatigue, homesickness and brotherhood are some of the common denominators apparant in this image…brilliant!

    Really cool shot, Christopher!!
I would hate to participate as a soldier in the Iraq war…
Viet Nam was not as an “aggressive war” for me..
Course, there were people trying to kill us, but it was a lot less confrontational….

I just want to add to the list. It’s an awesome shot in an amazing portfolio. You’ve captured weariness and a sense of the pause in between action.

Your images are mundane. By that I mean you don’t capture the extremes of action, it’s not gory or bloodthirsty. It’s the essence of a relentless job in extreme circumstances. This is the day to day reality that we rarely see but has an immense impact when we do.

Thanks for bringing these moments to the rest of us.
