Phillip…..as a mother, (and one of my son’s was in the Australian army for 20 years…technical…cartographer) I look at this image and wonder about their Mum’s. I never had to worry about my boy…I can only hazard a guess at what they must go through knowing the danger their boys face every day. This is such an amazing shot….their exhaustion is so apparent. I wonder how a body can maintain itself with all the clobber they have to carry in all that heat. I hope the term ‘boy’ doesn’t offend you…but to mum’s that’s what you are…our boys :-) God bless you.
Wow, this is great, love being able to look into you life as a soldier, So much we civilians don’t understand and only get what the media give us. So its refreshing to see something that is real and true. BillyLee
Wow. Your work is really fantastic! Its really interesting to see some “real” images of these places. I find I hear about them everyday, but never see any images of them. Its also nice to see personal images. Great shot!!!
thanx for sharing this .. it’s almost surreal to me ..
and now as my little brother is preparing to go to East Timor (first time OS) ... i shudder just a little bit .. but strength and courage to you all – you’re all amazing and give so much to this world xx
You should send your work in to National Geographic. They would love this, especially if you could put a story behind it. This photo is a great capture of a moment. You can’t help wondering what these guys have just been through. Brilliant!
Such and emotive shot…..............their faces tell their stories….....they look like they don’t have the energy or desire to smile….........why would they??? They should be home with their families…........ So brilliantly captured.
The thing i love so much about this image is that it reflects any war at any time, all that gives it away is the modern uniform otherwise they could just as easily be in the 1st or 2nd World War. Fatigue, homesickness and brotherhood are some of the common denominators apparant in this image…brilliant!
This is so moving. My mouth is actually dry from looking at this image and I can’t imagine having to endure this every day. I pray for their peace of mind every day.
Really cool shot, Christopher!! I would hate to participate as a soldier in the Iraq war… Viet Nam was not as an “aggressive war” for me.. Course, there were people trying to kill us, but it was a lot less confrontational…. mel
I just want to add to the list. It’s an awesome shot in an amazing portfolio. You’ve captured weariness and a sense of the pause in between action.
Your images are mundane. By that I mean you don’t capture the extremes of action, it’s not gory or bloodthirsty. It’s the essence of a relentless job in extreme circumstances. This is the day to day reality that we rarely see but has an immense impact when we do.
Thanks for bringing these moments to the rest of us.
fantastic again. your work is very important – not enough people documenting the war, and in future they will look back at this period of history and want more images, and stories etc…
