And by standing behind the bench you add another layer of spectating – one step removed and the negative space in the painting echoes your absent spectator on the bench. And then the juxtaposition of vertical and negative space in your image – hehe you’ve completely coopted his work my friend and made it your own. Beautiful.
“The progression of a painter’s work as it travels in time from point to point, will be toward clarity…toward the elimination of all obstacles between the painter and the idea.. and the idea and the observer…To achieve this clarity is inevitably to be understood.” (Mark Rothko) Thank you Geoff…..sometimes I dare and you clarify….so well – !
i love this piece of art you’ve painted through julian’s lens a whole lot more than rothko’s painting alone… this is my favoritestest of all of your work here… ♥ it, julian~
Thank you Mimi…....I thought about this carefully (basing a photograph on someone else’s art) but thought that some kind of harmony could come out of it – so glad you liked/like it! Ty…
I saw his retrospective in London recently and photography was strictly forbidden. Lucky you! As Margot says ‘He’s The Man’. This is a very creative shot Julian BTW… couldn’t see you ‘V’ shot.
The man indeed…....and I well remember you announcing the exhibit and how excited you were. Yes, photography is generally not allowed but in this case it was (in this particular room, which contains a Rothko). In general museums that actually own the work will allow (non flash of course) photog….never in the case when it is lent or other photographs… My “V” shot went back to the think tank…it”ll surface again, I’m sure – thanks for noticing Denis.
I have been meaning to write something about my Rothko experience in November. That is in the think tank too, but should emerge soon. Watch that big ‘black’ space!
Well I will be honest, I had to look Rothko up.. having said that I love your composition and balance in this piece and think it is a fine tribute to an artist you admire!
Rothko is very much love/hate…..no middle terms. Te best way to relate is to stand in front of one of his works and try to catch the energy emanating. Thank you for your sincerity and liking this composition of basic elements…

Nice work, Julian! Well done!
Julian Escardo replied
Thank you Sean…...equal participation between spectator (bench) and painter. Negative / positive, never an in between with Rothko – thank you!
