When I was a kid, I had a running collection of four grocery bags that were full of different sticks; these sticks were different than all the other plain sticks just laying around, so I kept them – they were special to me. I remember, that one (one of my favorites) was long with an end that looked like the head of a pterodactyl, and it could be used to climb things to boot. Overtime, I also accumulated parts for an awesome cardboard space station. I collected (and still collect) rocks too, and have kept them in the same draw-string bag that my mom gave me when I was five. Ever since I was a child, I have been collecting little pieces of imagination in what most would consider compost. Doing what I do is a continuation of my hunt for the perfect piece of junk. Now, I use a camera to remember the castle on the cloud that I saw in the rust of a dumpster – it’s like remembering every cloud that you ever gave shape to combined with the joy of an easter egg hunt. It’s fun.
My first time photographing this subject matter was after an all-night rave at around noon the next day while I was high; somehow I ended up climbing into a dumpster to gawk at a white paint splatter that looked like an alien with my camera. Of course, I’ve come a long ways since then, as both an artist and person, sharper, more colorful, and composed.
The concept of dumpsters, parking lot posts, slabs of concrete, etc. is most successful when the viewer is tricked. I want others to see what they see, a reflection of their imaginations, before they know what it truly is. I want the knowledge of the stinking dumpster to hit you after having already appreciated something artistic or painterly about it. Nothing is more flattering to me than when somebody mistakes them as paintings, and that is when I know I have done what I set out to do. The viewing should be a pleasant baffling somewhere between ugly and beautiful, painting – photograph, real and surreal. I hope you enjoy what you can see. Thank you.
