This painting is watercolour on paper.
I did this in response to a call for entries for an exhibition titled “Outback to Hill End” at the Royal Art Society, Sydney.
We went, over Easter, to Hill End itself. It’s an old prospecting town, over the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney.
We stayed two days, taking lots of photos and this painting came from a “gift”. The sun had dropped down low and the clouds were banked up in the East. Click! one moment and I had got it! And the next moment, the magic was gone. The sun went behind more clouds.
In fact it was cloudy most of the time we were there and was disappointing in that way, because I love to paint the contrast of sun and shadow. But there was just enough sun to satisfy me, mostly morning and evening, and I may paint some more of this fascinating area.
And……………..hardly a spot of water to be seen. Mind you, I did go down to the river where they used to pan for gold and got some shots in. Nothing I fancy painting yet though.
Interestingly, there are now four exploratory mines there and it looks like they will be operational in the future, still plenty of gold there.
Thank you once again for all the kind comments, faves and watches.

Oh Freda, I just get ill with envy everytime I see a new posting. This is just amazing. Not just you superior painting skills, but the depth and composition in this painting are textbook. Super!
Thank you so much, Jim, this is a complement indeed, coming from a highly skilled painter and ex graphic designer as yourself.
