"Mama Once Told Her"

She had two babies in diaper’s, flung high on each hip,
her lips pursed in anger, as a curse word had slipped.
A child still in her bloom, for she was only eighteen,
as the man she’d married, drove nails in her dreams.

On most day’s he’s late, for he loves to linger in bars,
drink beer with the grifters, in her midnight of stars.
She cries in her bedroom, where her children don’t hear,
with her spirit now shattered, she wails aloud bitter tears.

Her mama once told her, girl, you better think twice,
where you make your bed, can bring sorrow and strife.
She wallers in the night, wondering how this could be,
that the man that she loved, trampled all of her needs.

The slow passing of nights, turns her heart into stone,
vowing never to leave him, even though he would roam.
See commitment was greater, for the heart of this bride,
and her children of youth, needed a dad to stand by.

In the years of her life, she did the best that she could,
her heart now a fortress, from the hurts she’s withstood.
Her face is now mortared, by the walls that rage built,
to sustain loves commitment, to her man with no guilt!

"Mama Once Told Her" by

! This is another poem that was inspired by my mother’s life, I hope all who read enjoy. The piece doesn’t tell a very pretty story but it was part of her experience and in the telling I mean no disrespect to my dad who was on his own journey in life to find himself. I loved them both so deeply and miss them beyond words♥♥♥! I think this piece speaks very well on it’s own. I’ve watched this very scenario play out in the lives of a few of the women in my family. Not sure how the tale ends is necessary but some choose to allow their hearts to become master wall builders. No one wins in either case, always better to forgive………..

Very emotional …A story told way too many times in our society…And getting worse by the day by both genders…

  • Thank you Gary for reading this poem. I couldn’t agree more that both genders are affected by the selfish deeds of many a spouse. The enviroment my parents created through their constant drama exacted it’s own kind of torture for us as children and it’s had grave consequences in each of our lives. By the mercies of our great God I have not taken the road that my siblings did even though there are those times when I am confronted with the sadness of my early experiences. The Lord is still working on me thankfully :0) Writing has helped me work thru the pain too………………blessings, Barbara
