A beautiful woman contemplates the blue notes of her Lavender Mandolin. Translating Australian photographer, Mel Brackstone’s, black and white, “Musician”, by permission (see below).
Photography stands alone as an art form, and so does a photographer’s artwork, the masterpiece he or she sees through the lens, sometimes spends hours setting up, and reworks in post processing. So when I set out to “translate” Mel’s photograph for the Human Figure workshop, I knew that the painting would not be a reproduction. Mine never are.
There was an elegance and gracefulness in the pose that I wanted to capture. As the magic began to happen, I sensed the emotions in this woman sitting in the privacy of her room with only her music and her thoughts. Out of the shadows came the lavender and the notes…. for her ears only.
Thank you, Mel, for allowing me the pleasure of painting from your work!
