Oil on canvas hard panel

In the old South– the deep South, especially, grandmothers were called “Big Mama”, I suppose meaning one step up from “Mama”. Likewise, grandfathers were called by Big Daddy" or “Big Papa”.

So it was the tradition in my family, where my Father grew up in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, in the deep South, living in his grandparent’s house during the Great Depression. His grandparents were from New York state; but that didn’t matter much. There, they were called by “Big Papa” and “Big Mama”. And we great-grandkids revered “Big Mama” and her “big” southern home with the grand staircase, and the fine things from all corners of the world, and my favorite alabaster polar bear lamp in the entry; and I thought that was just her name.

The chest is now in my mother’s home; and these are my mother’s roses on Big Mama’s chest.
