Diversity in Watercolour opens today!

December 15, 2012

I’m proud to announce the opening of Diversity in Watercolour, a special exhibition of nearly 60 watercolor works by various artists of Solo Exhibition.

The show, curated by Claudia Dingle and Janis Zroback, has been in the works for over a month. Today, it opens, in all its beauty.

Don’t miss it! As a host and founder of Solo Exhibition, it’s an honor to sponsor this member-curated event.

Congratulations, Janis and Claudia!
And congratulations to each of the fine artists represented in the show. It’s a beauty!

Nice Job on the Images Pages RB!

Tues. November 20, 2012

Great job, RedBubble, on the newly designed, aerodynamic image pages.

The Links to the Comments and Description are clearly marked and in sync with the general page design on the site.

My favorite part is the collection of thumbnails on the same page as the starring image. This is so much nicer than than the 3-image scroller that used to occupy the right column. The design gives the image breathing room.

The page is also a handy compromise solution to those who would like to hide comments altogether (yes, there are some who would like that very much). It’s all about discovery, which, after all is the real fun in the web.

The nice thing is, no SEO is sacrificed. Underneath the hood, everything is actually still on one HTML page. It’s just that, through …

Apple's Innovation... again!

Apple’s innovations hit new marks

I always enjoyed Steve Job’s keynote addresses, and anticipated them more than, say, the President’s State of the Union. His bit of bravado and assuredness added an edge to his presentations. Did you know he had done these kind of presentations since the beginning days of Apple? You can find some old ones on YouTube.

Tim Cook, Apple’s new CEO, doesn’t have the same stage presence or presentation skills as Job’s had; but he seems genuinely proud of the engineering team and designs; and what I like very much about him, is that he seems to be a numbers man. Numbers reveal so much. And Apple’s new numbers are nothing short of jaw dropping. Philip Schiller…

A link to the RB’s general discussion forums was also added just below that.

If there are any other updates that I have missed, and you would like to see included in that journal, please just leave a note in the comments over there, and I’ll research it.

Work behind the scenes: a Golden Eagle's snowy flight

12 × 9 in. oil on artist panel

Inspired by Rebecca Cozart’s Into the Storm

Into The Storm
by Rebecca Cozart

I painted a 9 × 12 inch artist panel with pure Prussian Blue, and ragged it with thinner in random, swirling motions. (see WIP #2)

The thinking in oil painting is fat over lean layers, so that the outer levels dry slower and expand and contract, without cracking. For this to happen they should be painted over lean (or thinned) layers, which dry relatively rapidly.

After ragging off the excess Prussian Blue, I applied whites and mixed fleshy colored whites, wet on wet, with a nice, thick Filbert, to the top third of the artwork. This al…

Daniel Butler

I noticed that Daniel Butler’s account (floridaartist66) has been dropped. I just exchanged messages with him 11 days ago, inviting him to submit the following birds to Solo for our upcoming theme exhibition, “For the Birds”. He mentioned that he was in the midst of a really busy art season.

I will miss Daniel, as his paintings of the Florida landscape were skilled, beautiful, inspiring. I featured him often in the Southern United States Artists group, and had intentions to invite him for a Solo Exhibition this year.

Daniel, if you’re looking in, all the best wishes. And know that you and your paintings will be missed. Please hurry back! And best of luck in your exhibitions.
