Lost an image? Now you can retrieve your upload from RB. by F.A. Moore

Posted on July 11, 2011

This wish was on the RB bucket list: to retrieve your original uploaded image from RedBubble, when you lose it on your system

Now it is “completed”. Bravo to RedBubble!

Mel Brackstone announced it in her journal today. That’s how I found out we got our wish.

Let’s pass this around!

I had to retrieve one of my own; so I took some screenshots in 4 different browsers to illustrate how to do this.

How To

NOTE: RB has updated the method since this post.
Please click this to see the comment, below, where I have posted two updated screenshots.

  1. You know the ol’ right click (or control-click if you use the keyboard)…
  2. Go to the edit screen in RedBubble for your image
  3. At the top right, see the link to your original upload xxxx.jpg or xxxx.png
  4. In the illustrations, below, the link says “Consolidation.png”
  5. Rt-click or control click that link, hold your mouse down, and a
    “contextual menu will come up”.
  6. Select the item on the menu, per the illustration below, for your particular browser.

Here is how those menus appear. See the mouse cursor in the illustration.
Each browser has a unique contextual menu.
Whatever it points to in the illustrated browser, is what you will select, for that browser.

FIREFOX – rt- or control-click image link, select “Save Link As”

CHROME – rt- or control-click image link, select “Save Link As”

SAFARI – rt- or control-click image link, select “Download Linked File As”

OPERA – rt- or control-click image link, select “Save Linked Content As”

Internet Explorer, I don’t have, so there’s no screenshot.

If you’re not a fan of contextual menus, you can always just:

  1. rt- or control-click the image link and not hold down the mouse.
  2. You will link to the image url on redbubble’s storage space on amazon.
  3. Simply click and drag the image onto your desktop or into your preferred folder from there.

Thanks, RedBubble!

YEAH, thanks RB, that is really useful. Thank you, thank you

  • F.A. Moore:

Very useful. It’s just wonderful to be able to do this when all else fails.
I backup psd files and folders and then delete them. I must have missed backing one up before deleting it.

Many have greater needs, whole hard drives crashed. So this is excellent news indeed.

  • Barbara Manis

    Barbara Manis

Fantastic news, now I’ll be able to sleep at night!

  • F.A. Moore:

    Isn’t it though!!

    Esperanza Gallego

OMG, yesterday I was wondering about this………..
    You are great
Thanks so much for the information;)

  • F.A. Moore:

Perfect timing! I had checked on the status of this suggestion just a couple of weeks ago. It’s wonderful that we have it. It’s perfect!

The image won’t download as the same name. Probably for privacy reasons, the image is stored as a “number” on the amazon servers, like 897654.png.

That’s why I suggested the contextual menu and the save AS or download AS options; because these allow you to rename the file, closer to its original name, and put it straight into the folder you want.

  • Jeannine St-Amour

    Jeannine St-Amour

That is sooooooooooooooooooooo wonderful. I have lost all of my images on my external hard drive last year after a powerful surge during a storm and it cost me $1000 to recover “most”, not all, of my pictures. That will be so useful…. THANK YOU SO MUCH RB!

  • F.A. Moore:

Jeannine, wow!!!! Thank God, truly, for your sake, for this new feature. I’m so glad you posted. Do you know why? Because what you have said should strike an immediate reaction in all of us on our computers when big storms arise.

I shut down because I know of two different people in two different places who have had their computer catch on fire via electricity (lightening) that surged through their plug.

Living on the coast, on or near the water, where storms can have violent lightening attached, I’m pretty diligent about shutting down, but not always. Too often, there’s just “one more thing” to do.

I’m so happy for you, Jeannine!

    George Lenz

so that mans if your userid and password was compromised someone could steal your art from Red Bubble? I think this should be made optional in the user’s profile, because personally I would not want that to be automatically an option.

  • F.A. Moore:

Even if it was an option, and your user id and password were compromised, George, they’d simply turn off the option and then get it.

This is how the net works. That’s why it’s important to protect userid and password for anything the best you can.

  • Igor Shrayer

Sure thing, Igor. It’s a godsend for when we are desperate for it.

Yeah I just found out last night. I think this is great. Would have been useful last year when I lost my backup drive.

  • Lynnette Shelley

(which cost me a grand by the way (to retrieve all my lost artwork files)

  • F.A. Moore:

Gosh, Jeannine just reported spending the same amount last year for file retrieval. That’s hefty. Yes, it’s been on the bucket list for a while. I believe RB may have added to its programming staff – (they were looking). So we’re seeing more things getting ticked off those check lists.

Thank you, Frannie :). This is good news!! Another place to have back-up, for safe-keeping.

  • F.A. Moore:

I doubt that they intend it as a backup service; but certainly when a back up plan fails, or the hard drive crashes and there is no backup, it’s at least peace of mind that a pretty good copy exist – the file uploaded to RB.

Thanks so much for this journal entry: I missed Mel’s. About a year a go my laptop went on the fritz, and I had to replace it, but I still have the hardware though, not sure how to take it apart to find my original files… if that makes any sense. I am off work tomorrow, so I plan to focus some time retrieving my files from our trusty Readbubble!!!

  • F.A. Moore:

Oh, wonderful, Beth! I had to retrieve one myself.

  • eoconnor

    eoconnor

GREAT COMPLEX BUT IF NEEDED WORTH THE EFFORT @lIZ

  • F.A. Moore:

If this is too complex, you can always just select it and drag it to your desktop.

I like putting it where it belongs the first time, which this method allows you to do, plus rename it, all in on swoop. Dragging it to your desktop will save it with a numeric name, like 8172239.jpg

  • izzybeth

    izzybeth

So if I am in firefox and the prompt says save image as… I do choose as J peg, right?

  • F.A. Moore:

You normally would save it to whatever it is on the REDBUBBLE server.

However, since JPG’s are lossy, meaning the more you save a jpg of a jpg of a jpg the more data is lost (the more pixels are lost), it’s better to save it as a PNG, which is a bigger file, because it doesn’t lose data like a jpg.

  • izzybeth

    izzybeth

    ahhh ok…
So what ever was saved on rb’s server I would get back if I save it as a PNG?
In other words, when you save a file as a PNG, you are saving the highest quality in resolution? And on a different note if I was going to send someone a copy of a file of an image that I wanted him to see but not take and exploit as his own, would I send him a jpg?

  • F.A. Moore:

    Correct on both counts.

If you did not want someone to exploit an image, and it was NOT for publication, then you might send a low resolution jpg (72 ppi), saved at a medium level quality, say 40-50% (or 5-6), rather than 100% (or 12), or in between those (medium high quality). Publications want/need 300ppi and lossless TIF files or PNG is often fine.

  • LudaNayvelt

    LudaNayvelt

does it still works? I can not even find the image name anymore, after RB latest update

  • izzybeth

    izzybeth

I think some favorites just have to be revisited… It has been a long time since you posted it. Now I will dedicate time to upload my old files. before it is too late again. love and kisses, Beth

  • F.A. Moore:

Now, since the recent updates, it’s in another place, and I need to update this journal. Thanks for reminding me.

There is a subheader called Image Files. Below that, you will see an extra small icon of your uploaded image. There is a very faint, gray icon to it’s left.

    1. To Download the image, mouse over the faint icon to the left of the image.
A tooltip will appear that tells you it’s a download. Rt.click (or control click) to Download saved file (or save linked file) to your disk. This option allows you to place it where you want to on your computer, and rename it.
    1. To replace the image, mouseover the image, and you will see that it changes to replace. Click that link and follow instructions and intuition.
  • izzybeth

    izzybeth

Lol. I was about to send you a note of eyebrow wrinkling and head scratching, but was not gona because I know it is not your fault that I was not ‘getting’ it. thanks so much. let’s see now. xoxox

  • F.A. Moore:

LOL, well it was my fault for not updating this post. Rapid changes make how to journals obsolete quickly. The right click stuff still applies; it’s just that the link is a tiny, obscure icon now, instead of a nice bright blue link with the name of the file. :)) At first I thought it was gone, and had to be directed to it, myself.

  • izzybeth

    izzybeth

Hi there. I believe this journal needs to be at the beginning of my favorites so I can access it when ever I want to… I am going to try again to place it in my most current of favorites… If I can not do that I may try to add this into a new journal page so I will be able at find it easily as needed. BTW Frannie, I hope your holiday season it the best you have ever had! Love Beth

  • Emma Gilette

    Emma Gilette

Please help me! This doesn’t make any sense as I can’t find any of the links you are talking about. I only have Safari on my computer and my main computer just broke down last night (it is only a few months old, and it has all my photos on it!) I am meant to be entering a competition tomorrow, but I can’t access my files … can you help me?

  • F.A. Moore:

Hi, Emma, I have Safari too, so should be able to help you. RB has changed the way we retrieve images. So let me look and I’ll be right back to you.

  • F.A. Moore:

Emma, I have posted an update w/ two screenshots in the comments, below your comment. Good luck!

  • F.A. Moore

    F.A. Moore

    UPDATE:

RedBubble changed the way we retrieve images. Here are two new screenshots that show how. Should be the same in every browser, even though these screenshots are taken with Safari.

“Go into RB EDIT mode for your image, find the tiny thumbnail of the image below the description, look to its left to see a very light gray download icon. The mouse cursor is point to it, in this screenshot.

“Hover over the light gray download icon and then click it to download. You will be taken to Amazon, where the image is stored in RB’s private database. Because your image is large (as originally loaded), it may take a minute or two for your image to full load. WAIT for it! Once you see your entire image, right click and save it. Or use Control-click, on a Mac and save to your computer.

  • Emma Gilette

    Emma Gilette

Thank you! I was staring at this damn page for hours (crying!) and couldn’t find this button. Thanks for showing me where it was. Worked perfectly!

  • F.A. Moore:
