Have you secured your spot in SoJie 12, yet? by F.A. Moore

Posted on June 29, 2011

update – August 1st, 2011.

Eight-three (83) photographs have been successfully and brilliantly translated to traditional art and are preparing now for the end of August show, SoJie 12.

The workshop was a huge success and will serve as a sort of template for future projects. Over a period of 5 weeks, the workshop itself garnered 53,000 views, with fans logging an average of 2000 views a day during a 3-week peak, to see the posted works in progress.

Thanks to all who photographers and artists who participated and to all the fans of this workshop.

Have you secured your spot in SoJie 12, yet?

There are around 11 pre-approved photographs still to select for translation to YOUR STYLE. We have a process that takes more to explain than to just do.

  1. select the work for translation, if it has not been spoken for
  2. contact the photographer
  3. once agreed, pass a pre-made agreement between you, post it, and get started.
  4. for this show, works must be translated to a traditional art form

The SoJie 12 Workshop is buzzing with energy and activity. Traditional artists with all styles and mediums are welcome and encouraged. Yes I have Frannie. So wonderful to be part of this exciting workshop and exhibition with my photo Beautiful Woman, Beautiful Bird and to have Ina Mar translate this. Am enjoying seeing the works in progress in workshop. Just saw Janis painting of Isa’s photograph. Wow it looks amazing. Have favourited this and emailed this journal and will post it where I can to spread the word. Am looking forward to seeing more works in progress and finished works.

  • F.A. Moore:

I’m looking forward to the works in progress too. We have such excellent artists working on these, so far; and I know some others are making offers. This is so excellent, and wonderful that your photograph is in!

  • Tahnja

    Tahnja

I would have loved to be a part of this but have no time to do so….sigh…but will love watching what happens!

  • F.A. Moore:

Now Tahnja, you really don’t want to miss this fun. You’ve got an entire month to paint. If you have time to watch, you have time to do. You won’t regret it Tahnja. Come join us. :)

  • Jim Phillips

    Jim Phillips

OK Frannie, Dave Godden responded and he and I have a partnership. Now what do I do aside from getting busy painting. Do I post something and exactly what do I post and where do I post it. Seriously, not at all sure about what to do. I can paint….LOL

  • F.A. Moore:

Ha! You can paint alright. If you go to the workshop, you’ll see agreements posted on say pages 6 – 11. Those are all standard, and you will find the “download” link on page 5, in the top paragraphs there. It also tells you what to do with it RIGHT THERE. Simple. That and then get busy and start posting your works in progress.

If you have a video camera, I’m also looking for a few video’d works in progress so that I can add them to some still for a documentary “movie” about the workshop.

Dave needs to place some wording (also on page 5) under his image there. I can do it for him, if he’ll write me.

  • F.A. Moore:

Congratulations, Jim! Dave’s photograph is gorgeous and I can only imagine your beautiful painting.

  • Chris Armytage™

    Chris Armytage™

YAY! Congratulations to all the matched up Photographers and Artists … work in progress is looking good! This is so exciting Frannie!

  • F.A. Moore:

I am rooting for your photograph to get a match-up soon. I’m picturing it by a couple of artists I know. It’s fun, in spite of the pins and needles effect! :)

  • Chris Armytage™

    Chris Armytage™

LOL, my nails are down to the quick Frannie! ….. page 3 for all those artists who haven’t yet chosen :)))

  • F.A. Moore:

    LOL! plugs are allowed. :))

    Tahnja

You could talk me into just about anything Frannie, you are such a sweetheart! I’ve got a month you say? Hmmm…now you really got me thinking lol….I’ll go have another look…the ones I loved are already taken though

  • F.A. Moore:

Oh, but there are more to love… :)

  • F.A. Moore:

Look above you, here, in this journal, and see whose work you ended up offering to paint. Just wonderful!

This is such a great idea, i apologize for missing the chance to post one of my photographs, aseel at the switch! tony

  • F.A. Moore:

Oh gosh, Tony, I wish you had snapped up the opportunity too. You have so many which would translate well!

    We’ll do it again!

  • F.A. Moore:

But I do want to solo you. :)

  • photosbytony

    photosbytony

Thank You Frannie! I hope you do do it again. I had one person on here ask to paint one of my photos and I was pleased with what she did, that was quite awhile ago. One of the blizzard photos. Not sure on how to pick ones that translate to painting well. Sometimes I see artists work on here and think I’d love to see them paint one of my photos. The lady that did my blizzard photo was pretty literal in the approach she took. I think it would be wonderful to see somebody do their own interpretation since a painter has so much more freedom to create if that makes sense. And I am extremely flattered that you would consider soloing me. I am sure you know that since the camera was invented there has been countless discussions on whether it is “Art” or not. Being old school, a traditionalist in terms of photography, my approach to photography is pretty straightforward and about the image as seen through the viewfinder. In some ways I see it as a craft while still recognizing that it can impact the viewer in many different ways. Even here on Rb when you click on athe add work button the first category is Art/ Photography. :) Anyway the point is for me is that i am a photographer and a traditionalist and call what i do what you want, it isn’t important to me whether it is considered art or not, I’ll leave that up to the viewer to decide. What I do hope is that you appreciate it enough to have a reaction whether it be simple appreciation, insight or in some cases an emotional reaction of some kind, a smile, a laugh, a tear, anger, happiness concern, empathy, horror, shock whatever but a reaction. Okay I have run on way too much here, must have been the wine! LOL tony

  • F.A. Moore:

giggling. Enjoy the wine, Tony. And I do understand what you mean. I appreciate both the art and the craft and believe photography can combine both, just in a different way than an artist combines art and craft.

  • ArtPearl

    ArtPearl

@Tony – It is possible for photographs to be artistic, just as it is possible for traditional art works- painting drawing etc – to be of no artistic value at all:)
I havnt met your work before, but they look very inspiring to me. I’d love to include elements of your work in some of my paintings sometime in the future. If you look at my interpretation of ‘Dance of the trout’ for this project you’ll see I put a different twist to it… (Also if you see my painting ‘leap of hope’ in my gallery that one was a collaboration with a RB photographer…)
Perhaps we can be in touch after this project is done.
And we have to thank Frannie for these wonderful collaboration opportunities!

  • Corri Gryting Gutzman

    Corri Gryting ...

    photosbytony

This is so cool! Find myself anxious to see what the artists do with the different images. Pretty exciting! tony

  • F.A. Moore:

It is fun to see. Some are fairly straight forward interpretations, some are not! Love seeing the process.

  • photosbytony

    photosbytony

@ArtPearl Flattered that you would want to and willing to cooperate. I’ll check out “Dance of the Trout” and Leap of faith. Really am flattered that you would consider one of my images. tony

  • F.A. Moore:

    You’re getting offers! :D

    photosbytony

I agree Frannie, definitely fun to see ! Yes, got an offer and very flattered! tony

  • photosbytony

    photosbytony

Next time I’ll be on time ! :) tony

  • F.A. Moore:

RedBubble’s message system shows two msgs. per page, and the oldest one gets pushed to the top by the newest one. It’s a shame for those looking at their top msg only. You’re not the only one who missed this one.

  • Rhoufi

    Rhoufi

    @photosbytony
Tony, I feel the need to convince you that photography is most definitely art, but I’d need a couple of bottles of red, a cafe in the Latin Quarter of Paris, the company of a good street photographer and a sensitive abstract photographer and plenty of time. But, you would be convinced, and we’d have a ball :-)))

I just had a quick look in your gallery and it is full of art. An example is “Taking a Break” – subject matter, composition, lighting and geometry all contribute to a beautiful artistic image. Every decision you made from capture to presentation (e.g. choosing B+W) were artistic. This photo oozes beauty, story and emotion. And of course your blizzard series!! Say no more! Check out Edgar Dega’s ballet dancer series (and especially his L’absinthe) and I’ll bet you can see a sensitive street photograph in every one.

So please be sure you submit a photo for the next SoJie – your images will translate to beautiful art. In fact, I’ll remind you :-))))

  • Marsha Free

    Marsha Free

George Lenz and I are currently working our agreement for his photo – ROOTS. Will send it to you as soon as we are finished.

  • F.A. Moore:

Fantastic, Marsha. What a beautiful nature shot for you to translate. Be sure to get a better resolution electronic file from George emailed to you. That shown in the workshop is the largest available on RB without a watermark and there is no detail showing up in it. It’s best to request it at this stage of the agreement. I’m so happy for you and George!

  • Rene Fuller

    Rene Fuller

@ Rhoufi and Tony, I would love to join you:)! We’d have several balls:)!

  • Tahnja

    Tahnja

lol how amazing was that? I didn’t even realise that Chris had posted right before and after me and we ended up matching up as per my offer….love it when things like that happen.

    You rock Frannie!

Thanks for all you do Frannie! I’m starting today with mine! ;-) Wonderful to share all over the world!

  • F.A. Moore:

Your palette knife work is perfect for the image you selected. So far, so beautiful, Elizabeth!

  • Cindy Schnackel

    Cindy Schnackel

The WIPs are fascinating, and though I’ve tried to keep up and comment on finished works, am sure I’ve missed some. Will be so cool to see it all complete and look at the photos side by side with the artists’ interpretations. This is quite an undertaking, thank you so much for doing it!

  • F.A. Moore:

Cindy so delighted you’ve joined us. I can’t wait to see how your Cardinal character takes shape. You have an incredible way with personality and characters; so this will be a serious treat for me (and others!)

  • F.A. Moore:

Hey hey Brian!! You know it will be a blast!! Right now we’re waiting on Eliza to start the placeholder posts. ;) What a great workshop this has been. I’m so glad you submitted your great trout photo, and that Pnina painted her inspired piece from it. Wonderful!! Talk w/ you soon!

I did not know about SoJie 12 exhibition till I went to joint the group Solo exhibition. And what a terrific adventure it has been. It is so exhilarating that I joined SoJie 13. Frannie and his team has been very helpful and gave us a lot of their time to make it so successful. Very much appreciated. Bravo to all artists who participate in. unfortunately I did not write a lot of comments to other artists due to other professional commitments. I apologized for not doing it so.
