Work in Progress (updated)
I leave it to you to decide to whom or what the title points.
In the mean time, here is a sneak peak at a mixed media oil painting, shown in progress.
![]() Lighting phase – recent in progress scan | ![]() oil paint over-drawn with oil pastel, before lighting phase |
“Garden Variety Siamese” is oil and oil pastel on canvas board, weighing in at a smallish 12 × 12 inches. There is more to do: a correction and another very thin shadow layer (or 2).
For this work, the majority of it was painted in oil. It started life as the Siamese against an abstract, and progressed to where the abstract became host to a garden and canopy of trees.
At that point, I found it overdone, but too late. All I could feel was remorse. But then, one midnight, when I was sure the paint was dry enough, I decided to enhance the foliage with oil pastels. Nice! Adding blips of color without having to mix paint and clean brushes?– this was to my immense liking! Once started, the painted cats and vase and lighted path, also got the “benefit” of my over-drawing.
Since then, it’s gotten some corrections and a wash with oil paint. The artwork is currently at the stage of the larger image, shown above, left.
UPDATE – Completed. June 25, 2011.

Garden Variety Siamese
by F.A. Moore
Now to approach another topic: I don’t know why I’m painting cats. No, you haven’t asked me why. But to me it’s the wild animal in the room (no offense to Elephants). So, I’m wondering the same thing.
I don’t have a series in mind or a collection. Heck I’m just reacquainting myself with the brush and slowly becoming comfortable with the fact that a piece will pull me along.
But, like my personal, broad taste in art, there seems to be a wide range in style.
You wouldn’t know that these latest 4 are by the same artist, if you weren’t following my work. (Would you?) Am I too close to see the common thread running through these?
Perhaps it is the enigma of the cat that has me overlooking some potentially obvious connection in style.
I have to add that I appreciate you so much giving me valued feedback and encouraging me (or not) along my painting pursuits. Museums and Fine Art Galleries present an open door to learning, and go far beyond their service goals of presenting fine art for appreciation. So, too, do catalogs and art books teach, as well as entertain the senses. I’ve learned from many of you, through the enjoyment of your work. My firm belief is that in seeing, we learn, in practicing, we make profound strides.

Wonderful rich colors and contrasts, and capture of the cats’ character, (as a species and as individuals). I like the mixing of patterns and textures that compliment the cats’ markings somehow. You’re brave to put oil paintings on a scanner, LOL, though I am sure they were dry or on support pegs or something. One of these days I just know I’m going to forget a dry but pretty fresh acrylic piece on the scanner and find it stuck there later.
F.A. Moore:
Thanks, Cindy, for commenting on those elements.
Yes, very dry. I’m getting accustomed to watching these things dry propped up on easels for a week between phases. The first time I scanned it, with the pastel overdrawing, though, some pastel bits flaked off. Nothing critical. Just had to windex the scanner well between scans. The last very, very thin oil wash was put on days ago, and it’s dry. That said, it will sit a few more days before I trust putting another oil wash (mostly turp.) over it, as I don’t want to chance ruining the transparency by mucking up the paint. The wash seems to have sealed the pastels, too.

You have amazing patience!
F.A. Moore:
I thought I did until picking up oil painting again. Oh my gosh. I had to work on 3-4 canvases at once, just to substantiate getting out the paints and messing up my work space! Profound frustration. But finally, I’ve settled down and am taking it in stride, now that there are a few finished pieces around me to look at. ;)

Robin, thank you for the encouragement. It’s fun to share the process with you. I know you appreciate it, as you’re on your own journey, exploring paint and multi-media.

Cats are THE best subject, they are difficult to do, but the satisfaction at having got something akin to what you set out to get is fabulous…love your cats.. I also find fiddling with a canvas in the middle of the night to be most satisfactory and quite addictive… :) x
F.A. Moore:
lol, yes, I think the midnight after thought could work for me. Thanks for the great commentary, Linda, on cat subjects, too! I’m delighted that you like my cats. :D

Cats are the mystics of our world and they choose to share their mysticism with us. I love them – which is why we have SIX! – and perhaps they have been using their telepathic powers to subconsciously urge you to paint them. I love all 4 works shown here – I might pick 2 & 3 as the same artist but the styles of the 4 works are quite distinct.
Two of our six feline felons are Siamese, and while I’ll never see them cuddled up together like this (they hiss and spit at each other, unfortunately) I can dream!
F.A. Moore:
Ahhh, about the Siamese. Are they related? I enjoyed reading your note here. And I’m surprised you picked out 2 and 3 as looking potentially by the same artist. ( lol! sounds weird). Thanks, Odille!
