Girl on Yellow Quilt

Girl on Yellow Quilt

Girl on Yellow Quilt
My great grand father on my mother’s side, I only knew in pictures and, later, stories. He was a small man with a mustache. He came over on the same ship from Bohemia as did his future wife, the mother of my mother’s mother; and they both settled in Saint Louis, Missouri, where they later met through friends… for the first time.

A tailor to the CEO’s in Saint Louis, He did pretty well, I guess; because they owned a lot of Real Estate. The daughters were dressed like models. Only later, when I was studying fashion design was I told about his work. Strange I didn’t know before. The stories I heard were always about the scientists, doctors, inventors, and entrepreneurs in my Dad’s pioneering family. Not the two little Bohemians, whose eyes and nose I have.

He made a quilt, hand-sewn of course, a yellow quilt, that I have always cherished. It’s the softest cotton. I can’t imagine that any of these fabrics were from men’s suits. When I use it, the quilt seems to bring good dreams and deep sleep and some feeling I have not yet discerned. Whatever its magic, sleeping on the yellow quilt, or under it, is my kind of “fine”. -F.A. Moore

Girl, digitally brush-painted; background, photocollage and textures.
Dimensions: 5000×3350 pixels

Special thanks to stock providers, FantasyStock for model reference (“Jody”) and orange Portulaca flower reference, CAStock
for white orchid reference, and xylofonflickan and Smoko-Stock for textures. Background is the artist’s own life-collage.

When I was working with my “Rebirth” series, something I changed turned the “quilt” to this gorgeous golden hue. I just had to share with you, not only the image, but some of the memories and feelings I experience upon seeing it. Thank you for reading.

What a nice, sentimental story to compliment your lovely image. I have a quilt made my mother and one by my grandmother and understand the comfort and closeness you can feel by way of your grandfather’s quilt.

Ah, yes. Your comments always hit the heart, Jill. Thank you.

F.A., I just love your work, sincerely. I realized it was not a close-up when the swans were missing! Got ya! Rebirth of Venus had beautiful swans & was also similar, yet different to this image. I especially love reading your words that go with this image. My grandfather on my Dad’s side was by trade an upholsterer. I found it interesting to read about your grandfather on your Mom’s side! I am so glad you came forward with this fact. He would be so proud of your hard work & your style! I’m so glad you have the treasured binky! This beautiful image is so spiritual in my mind.

=) Yep, indeed it is. My Mac is currently down – had a faulty graphics chip for the past 2 and a half years and I have been frightened to ask the repair cost (I didn´t get apple care as I was living in Venezuela an the time and they have no agent – not going to have the machine shipped to some foreign country and be without it for weeks). I hope it´s only a case that the chip is not contacting properly (I think that this is the problem) in which case the repair shpuld be affordable. I now have 2 or 3 authorized tech outlets here in Lima so will be mailing then for quotes in the next few days.

I had one or two issues with my my mac version (by the way you only buy one licence and it´ll do you for mac or PC…) The problem was random crashing when working with tracing or reference images. Not sure if it´s just my machine tho…..

I use painter maily for painting but have owned ArtRage plus for a few years now and only started playing with it recently. Love it!!!!

Thank you so much for your narrative which I totally relate to. A family heirloom of a hand sewn quilt is in my care and I feel it too brings special dreams and wonderful memories.
