Feeling the Void
The other casualties of war—those left behind, are seldom considered after the folded flag is given in memory of their loved one’s sacrifice.
This piece pays homage to those left behind, and explores “Feeling the Void”. It features the riderless horse, which, although reserved for colonels, or above, in the Army or Marine Corps, here, symbolizes the soul of the lost soldier. The horse here is a Friesian horse, on which a star blaze has been added as a tribute to “Black Jack”, a long serving riderless horse. The young woman represents a daughter, nearly grown, for all intents and purposes, but always and forever “Daddy’s girl”.
Take a moment with me and remember the wives, husbands, children, brothers, and sisters of the lost soldiers who paid their respective country with their life and, also, the lives of those they left behind.
Digital work, in watercolor style, June 2009

Aw, Fran! Such beauty and impact to this one. I love it!
F.A. Moore replied
Thank you, Jill. It’s funny how inspiration hits sometimes. I love this one too. The horse lends great power to the story. I gave him a star blaze after the greatly celebrated “Black Jack”.
F.A. Moore replied
I just noticed you favorited. I’m so pleased you like it so much. Me too.

Marvelous…...................this would make a great addition to the Horse and Rider group
F.A. Moore replied
Hello Barssel. I think I just joined that group and added this one. The riderless horse. I saw the group rules, but I hope they make an exception, as we all know the riderless horse honors the fallen. He’s so powerful here. And I worked hard painting that saddle! lol. Thank you!

I just now adjusted the dimensions of this piece, to include some area that I originally cropped. It now shows her reflection, which she is contemplating, and fills a Note Card space 100%.

I have to admit….sometimes I am so caught up in my own issues that I rarely take the time to think about those that suffer at the hands of war….there are so many different types of war out here. This is really profound work and it gave me something to really think about.
