Schnautzer - Work in Progress by

Picked up a commission yesterday for a pet portrait. Yippee!!!! I went round to the lady’s house to take loads of photos and the dog was gorgeous! I’m thinking of doing a tutorial for our website (if it turns out OK). This is the first wash and I think he’s OK so far!

Hi Fran, I like your work so much even in this half-made way. Can’t wait to see it finished. A very good idea to show the work in this situation as well. So we can see the different stages ot work process. It gives me a good help as I have just begun painting. I wonder how to predraw the work not to see the pencil lines under the ready made painting.

  • Thanks for a lovely comment Istvan! I know this one is NOT going to be easy! As I paint with many thin layers of acrylics the pencil lines don’t show! It’s not possible to erase them though, as the paint is basically plastic. My husband (Ian Osborne) paints in watercolours and you can erase the pencil even after painting.

You bet it’s OK so far & will get even better as you go along. It will be fun to watch the process. Can’t wait to see the finished painting.

  • Oh Marsha! You always pop up when I need you! I think this one’s going to take some time and the lady wants it this month. I forgot to say that the dark grasses are masking fluid! They’ll be rubbed off when I’m convinced the fur is finished!

This is looking fantastic already Fran! I love watching the steps in your paintings as I have never painted in acrylics using thin washes. For me it’s more a case of wacking heaps of think paint on and going from there lol! You have soooo much more patience than me lol!

  • Well I envy you! I really want to try wacking it on thick, but firstly my paint is too thin (do you use an acrylic medium?) and secondly, I wouldn’t know where to start, but I’m itching to try something with more texture!

Fran, I use Matisse structure acrylic which is a thick acrylic. I also sometimes use impasto medium and gel medium too. You can actually apply the impasto directly onto the canvas to create texture and then paint over it later.
