Pride of Baltimore II - Departure Day by

Pride of Baltimore II departing on the monday following the Tall Ship Celebration (2010) in Bay City (Bay County), Michigan, US. This was one of the stops for the Great Lakes United Tall Ships Challenge® – 2010, when a fleet of tall ships arrived in town (during the Parade of Sails) for the weekend, offering tours of the ships, sailing excursions on some vessels, and several special events around town. I believe most of the ships were heading to Duluth, Minnesota, US. I apologize if these photos are blurry or otherwise not too high of a quality. The weather had taken quite a turn for the worse. During the festival, everything was bright, sunny and warm (90 degree or warmer temperatures). However, on this day the temperature dropped quite a bit, and there was a cold drizzle.

This photograph was taken from the eastern approach of Liberty Bridge, viewing up the Saginaw River. In the background is Veterans Memorial Bridge.

Pride of Baltimore II is a topsail schooner, and is a replacement for a previous reproduction, which sank in 1986. The original ship was Chasseur, and a small boat aboard the latest model is named after it. Chasseur was a Baltimore Clipper, and served as a Privateer during the War of 1812.

Here, Pride of Baltimore II is just heading out. Hiawatha (Supposedly the last operational walking beam side-wheeler in the world) is the small yellowish ship near the dock, and Appledore V is still moored near the bridge.

I hadn’t really been ‘into’ photography until recently. Before then (about 2008), the costs of film, developing and printing was just too much for my wallet. Then, I bought my first digital camera…now I quite literally don’t know when to stop (well, maybe when the weather is too inclement, or the distances involved are prohibitive). Mostly, I stick with the local area (Bay City (Bay County), Michigan, US) – and have ‘discovered’ many hidden treasures nearby.
