Atrocity At Christmas

Praise the Lord at Christmas
A sentiment I must impress
Praise the Lord at Christmas
Praise him, for we are blessed

As we ready ourselves for Christmas
Get excited as midnight chimes
Loaded on the expectations
Of joy and happy times

As we open up our presents
And we feel the sense of expectation
Of what will be inside the wrappers
And we feel an inner celebration

Spare a thought for the lonely
Of the abandoned girls and boys
Who have no wish for presents
No need for sacks of toys

What they hope for every Christmas
Their one wish at Yule tide
Is that when they disregard the wrappings
That there’s just one thing inside

I’m sure you’ll feel their anguish
And I’m sure you’ll feel their pain
That the same thing happens every Christmas
Year in, year out, again and again and again

As we celebrate with our loved ones
Spend this special time, side by side
As we eat, drink and get merry
In ‘togetherness’ with our families, with inner sense of pride

Turn your thoughts to the needy children
Find the time to offer them prayer
Turn your thoughts to their isolation
And offer them your deepest care

For what makes it hard for them at Christmas
And what fills their hearts with pain
Even when they have grown into adults
Even when they have experienced it again and again

Is not knowing what we take for granted
Not feeling what the rest of us feel
Of not receiving the gift of their parents
And this atrocity at Christmas, this atrocity is real
