Foxfires

1979

Summertime, and we’re all in the yard…
With fresh mowed grass and soda…
Eyes closed and smiling
In chlorine and sunshine…

As brother and sister
We weren’t thinking of them
Only thinking of us
Olly Olly Oxen Free
Over rooftops and trees
You can’t catch me…

And if you ask me
What life was like then
Well I would tell you
Through eight year old eyes
Sleeping beneath the stars
We were happy….

We were happy….

Night time, and we’re up in our rooms
Playing 45’s and laughing…
We didn’t ask where
They went after dark…
We weren’t thinking of them
Only thinking of us
And we kept laughing…
We were happy…

And somewhere
In that two story house
Where mom clenched her hands
And dad left for hours…
We had Monopoly and ice cream
homework and dreaming
We weren’t living for them
Only living for us…

And if you ask me
What life was like then
Well I would tell you
Through eight year old eyes
Sleeping beneath the stars
We were happy….

I was 3 years into married life, but the vibe was there just the same. Must have been something in the air. Your writing is lovely and it puts me in a nice place. Thanks for sharing!

  • Foxfires replied

Thank you Billy! Those are good times, thinking back to those days of being innocently oblivious to everything outside that childhood bubblesphere.

    Excellent work

Thank you! This was an experiment on my part, to just let my thoughts wander, and see what appeared. I was actually quite surprised with this one, and so very pleased. I love hearing from people who like this one…. since it seems to be a very specific group of artistic people who are drawn to it.

For me, it would have been a decade earlier, but you’ve captured the feelings of the freedom and innocence of childhood perfectly. Lovely artwork, lovely poetry.

Wonderful work. Like a watercolor photograph melting away right before your very eyes. The softness and the pallette you’ve chosen are just so rich. Looks like you shellacked it with a creative abandon.

  • Foxfires replied

What a beautiful compliment, Mark! Thank you for that! You’ve brightened a rather chilly, rainy autumn day. :)

I truly love creating artwork like this. It is exactly how you put it… ‘creative abandon’. I hope to do more like this in the future, though at the moment I am tied to a few projects that reign me in a bit more than I am used to. ;)
