This young Ostrich is a flightless bird native to the African plains and deserts. It’s main diet is plants and grases, with an occaisonal feast of insects.
They live in nomadic groups anything from 5 to 30/40 birds. When threatend the birds tends to lay low on the ground or run at great speed. When cornered it will defend itself with its powerful strong legs, whcih can throw a fatal blow. I personally have witnessed a mans shoulder being dislocated by a swipe of an ostrich wing.
The Ostrich is one of the ;largest living birds remaining on the earth, albeit much smaller than the legendary extinct Madagascan elephant whcih stood over 10 feet tall.
The Ostrich is regarded as only slightly endangered, but I feel that it shoudl be on the endagered lsit, given taht most birds are either seen on so called Ostrich farms for human consumption or as caged as Zoo specimens.
Maybe in the future an animal will not be considered as being exstinct if a Zoo specimen exists. >>> shudder >>>
