I photographed this little guy in the moat surrounding Arundle Castle, Sussex, where a strong colony has grown over the years; which probably started by a few escapies from the WWT centre located about one mile from the castle

As their name suggests water voles live by waterways throughout mainland Britain, preferring slow flowing rivers and streams. Water voles are mainly vegetarian. Recording shows that they feed in a large number of differnt plant species, but are also known to eat insects, molluscs and dead fish They dig into the banks of streams or ditches to create a system of tunnels and chambers.

Water Voles can be found in Europe, some parts of Asisa and the West of North America.

The population has dwindled to the point it became an endangered specie. The main reaosn for the decline was the American mink, which were released by mink farmers into the wild. The American minks are natural born killer and water voles are on their favourite menu

However, one can not denie the impact from pollution caused by farmers and industry .

The British Wildlife Trust together with the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT) have embarked in a preservation programm in the hope to rekindle the population in the UK.

A photograph is seen with the eye, Created in the mind and Felt in the heart.

These are the moment I try to capture and share with you.

    omgosh! ADORABLE!

  • Hi Betsy, they are truly adorable, yet very shy. If you come to close they disappear into the many holes along the embankment. I just spotted him and he spotted me, but was quite comfortable to carry on munching the vegetation at the top of the embanment.

Is he ever a cutie!!! What a great shot…were you lying down or kneeling??? Your must have been pretty low!!! Well done on this little one!!! :-)

  • Hi Dawnie, theya re totally so sweet, although some people they think they are water rats, but theya re not. They are quite shy creatures and any fast movement or closeness has them scurrying away into their many escape holes along the embankment. Yes I was a spread eagled on the grass, together with my tripod. Had to have the camera on a tripodas the light was getting quite low.

Great shot and such a cutie!

  • Thank you! I was sitting there for some time watching them slip out of their holes, into the water and into another hole in the embankment, until finally late afternoon, he had the courage to sit their and have his supper. The slightest movement send him out of view under the embankment. Sadly they are often mistaken for rats and often chased by dogs with encouragement by their ignorant owners.them.
