Just beautiful! Great shot very clever, we have three sets of parents with very noisy chicks around our house again this year. The families are here all the time and never attempt to attack us. I don’t attempt to tame any of them we all live together.

  • thanks Rita – this baby is one of our “neighbours” – we also seem to have a couple of families

I love this photo, thanks for the image!
We lost Magpies here in Tasmania, Wilmot area 50 years ago due to DDT and 1080 poison. They are now back here only four years ago waking me up one morning on the big gum tree in the neighbours paddock. A song to rise too…wonderful.

  • thankyou Sarah – I didn’t realise maggies had been been wiped out by DDT and 1080 – we were in Wilmot and Cradle Mntn NP last year, must say I didn’t see any maggies, but then I was absorbed in all the new things I was seeing (and dodging the timber trucks) …

Only four in the area now but hope to get more if forestry stop taking away the native forests as the plantations are not good for our native birds and animals.
The trucks are a big worry, They are as big as double BS…three trailer long now on the road to Cradle Mountain, so winedy and narrow and they are going over double lines. I am doing a film doco on 1,000 truck for the Cairns film festival,.
    Cheers, Sarah

  • we certainly saw lots of trucks like

near New Norfolk – probably all off to be chipped I suppose.

We have lots of Magpies in Colorado. This is the first baby I have seen. Excellent detail and capture. Barb

  • thankyou Barbara – and I had always thought that maggies were entirely aussies … wonder if they are native american or introduced

    Hi Werner,
I did google ‘Magpies’ and there’s a lot of info. There seems to be a few different varieties and there is an Aussie version. I think you fellas sent them here to North America. Take them back … Barb

  • thanks Barb – that’s very interesting – will have to do a bit of research one day – we like our magpies, they are not a nuisance and they they’re great to listen to
