Christchurch Cathedral, New Zealand
Bishop Henry Harper started the cathedral project in 1858 when the adult male population of Canterbury town numbered only 450. The foundation stone was laid in 1864, but lack of funds delayed building work. The nave of the cathedral was completed in 1881 and the transepts, chancel and sanctuary were finally completed in 1904 at a cost of 64,000 pounds. (source)
Registered with the New Zealand Historic Places Trust as a Historic Place – Category I
The cathedral was wrecked by the earthquake of 22 February 2011

Lovely shot indeed, bit of history in more ways than one.

  • thankyou Varinia – I’d promised myself to have had another go at my Christchurch cathedral shots with a proper tripod, but now I guess I’m lucky to have any shots at all

wonderful shot in black and white

  • glad you like it, thankyou – I’m a bit attached to it since it’s the only shot I have of the cathedral not surrounded by scaffolding and before it was destroyed by the earthquakes.
