As always is the routine during San Francisco’s Fleet Week celebrations, the City’s fireboat will welcome the Fleet Week Parade of Ships with a huge spray of water as they enter the Golden Gate. What a grand surprise to see not SFFD’s Phoenix but Guardian Fireboat Number Two.
Built in British Columbia, Canada by Yarrows, Ltd., in 1951, this grand old workhorse was built for the purpose to be used as a fireboat for the Vancouver Fire Department. Designed with two deck turrets, a single pilot house turret, and one forward deck turret, she also has two on-deck house reels that holds 1000 feet of 3-inch hose each, along with a carbon dioxide system supplied by fourteen 75 lb. CO2 cylinders. In this picture captured in the 2012 edition of the Parade of Ships, the Guardian is spraying her water but the spray has turned to a colorful light show, and now more resembles the Northern Lights than a water-welcome!
