Bay Area storms brought some water and clouds but surely will not hamper the plans of many who flock to the top of Telegraph Hill and Coit Tower to look upon the City by the Bay by the thousands each day.

One of my favorite places. I still wonder about all the murals on the stairways and if they are being maintained.
will be there again next, will look. the murals inside at the base are still there… have never seen any murals outside along the stairs
They wouldn’t let anyone on the stairs any time I have been there but my Mom and Dad climbed them. These were the inside stairs leading to the top. They were painted by either WPA or CCC and my folks always said they were excellent.
those stairs have been closed to the public for some decades! have never heard mentioned there were murals there too… will have to go and ask sometime! thanks for sharing your insider info!! ;)
Maybe they would let you in to photograph them as documentation if you approached them. Be aware though – Mom said the stairs were in poor condition. But someone should document them if they haven’t been totally ruined over the years. I may have some of the photos Dad took but it would probably take me a couple of years to find them.
i regularly and routinely approach a lot of people regarding photographing the building interiors. it’s a shame but i can understand why the stairs etc would be in bad condition – but i am very thin and light!! thanks!!
Good luck – I sure hope you can document though photos those murals. Please feel free to delete my comments – and do add the city/state location and resubmit to the Pacific Northwest group – I do love this photo.
every Wednesday there is a City Guides tour that meets at the bottom of Coit Tower (the outside stairs) that goes through the lobby murals explaining the artist, etc. It ends by going through the locked doors that lead to the stairwell you described, and those murals are gorgeous! I didn’t hear too much of the narration; I was too busy snapping pixs!! ;) sorry for the delay in replying!
I am so glad you got to see the murals and even happier that you photographed them. I look forward to seeing your efforts. I hope to get down there next year to take care of some family business and if at all possible will find myself there on a Wednesday. Thanks for sharing the info.
