unposed and unrehearsed, this was snapped on a cold and very windy evening during the Temple of Poi 2009 Fire Dancing Expo event in San Francisco’s Union Square. my first-ever fire performance seen or photographed, it was beautiful to see!! the weather however didn’t cooperate and i was dressed warmly in thick coat and even gloves, though the performers were dressed quite loosely in their costumes… as you can see!

shot with a Canon EOS 40D in manual mode at iso1600, using a Tamron 28-300, exposures ranging from about 1/60 @ f/6.7, sometimes varying for brightness of flames, while still hoping to catch them at their peak action. Tripod mounted but mobile as it was used more as a monopod as they pranced to and from, and from left to right.
