as are all Marines serving all over the world… the face of this statue shows the expression of determination…. this is a detail of the Iwo Jima memorial in Washington, D.C. it’s a huge monument in case you haven’t seen it and took eight years to complete. Construction on the actual statue began September, 1954 after each of the figures were completed. Separately, it took three years to cast the huge figures!! The monument displays this phrase: “Uncommon Valor was a Common Virtue.” The figures in this memorial are 32 feet high and the flagpole alone is 60 feet in length. It’s considered the world’s tallest bronze statue at 78 feet high. A “real” cloth flag is flown from the pole. Back in 1954 the cost of the memorial was $850,000 but NO public funds were ever used; private donations picked up the tab.
