At the weekend I popped down to a local classic aircraft collection (called the Shuttleworth Collection) in a effect to find something too photograph. This particular weekend a model aircraft festival was taking place, which was quite an unusual experience to be part of.

The whole festival was under “increased security”, it turns out the collection had recently received several threatening letters, warning that the collection would be burned down if ever there was a single model aircraft flown on the site again. Amidst the seriousness of it all, I couldn’t help but see the funny-side to this threat, certainly when you look around there is nothing else but fields for miles and when you consider that the site also fly’s full-size aircraft these threats start to approach high levels of silliness. I’m not entirely sure what an increased level of security actually meant, I think it roughly amounted to an extra boy scout at the entrance gate.

Anyway, this is the first time I had ever been to a model aircraft festival, I wasn’t expecting to get any good photos, but actually you’re surrounded by lots of people doing all sorts of strange activities. The tethered plane flying contest was of particular novelty, a man spins around in a circle clutching a big piece string, which is then connected to his aircraft. I would like to be none gender specific, but much like the I.T. world it was fairly male orientated.

Also in the middle of another field (typically called the runway on a normal day) were a collection of people flying un-controlled powered aircraft. This requires that your attention level rises slightly from fear of being hit in the bottom with a propeller when you least expect it, or indeed even when you do expect it. Not that being hit was directly related to being in the field, for frequent stray aircraft would make there way into the car park, setting off a few alarms in the process.

Anyway, the photographic results of my booty I have placed on my own website news feed at;
