The Canada Lynx is a beautiful wildcat of the boreal forest. It has a short tail, long legs, large feet and prominent ear tufts.Its winter coat is light grey and slightly mottled with long guard hairs; the under fur is brownish.

The Lynx tends to be shy and solitary; even experienced hunters rarely see one in the wild.

They have thick cushions of hair on the soles of their large feet which act like snowshoes enabling them to travel easily over deep snow.

The Lynx feeds almost exclusively on snowshoe hares and has adapted to the cyclic availability of its prey. When snowshoe hares are scarce, the lynx will also feed on small to medium sized mammals and birds. They hunt by stalking or ambushing prey.

Like some other animals and birds of prey, they will also scavenge for food if the opportunity arises.

In this photo, I came upon the lynx feeding on a road killed deer approximately 20 miles north of Kenora, Ontario , Canada on a cold February afternoon.
