The name’s Flyrod. American car culture is my thing. If it rolls, roars, or rumbles I’m into it. Statistics and facts aren’t my gig. My mission is to track down and capture the infamous rides that make up pop culture, and to tell their stories.
A driver hauling kids in a bus from BirminghamFell asleep at the wheel and got into a jam
Eighteen kids held tight as the bus began to swerveTheir singing turned to screams as they went into a curve
The rear-end swung around and crashed the guardrailBut in spite of every effort that driver couldn’t prevail
Over the embankment to a gully down belowA terrified driver and his passengers would go
A witness called for help and five minutes pastOther traffic stopped and they all were aghast
A siren in the distance and a flashing red lightA giant diesel wrecker was speeding through the night
A man with guts and grit was sitting at the wheelThey called him Texas Red and his nerves were made of steel
He arrived at the scene and then he threw down a cableHe rapped it to the axle and it kept the wreck stable
As smoke poured from the cab he broke through the doorHe pulled four kids to safety and then went back for more
He tried to save the driver after every child got outOne more life to rescue as he fought the deadly bout
The gas tank exploded and the cable gave wayWe lost a mighty hero on that awful winter day
A sacrifice was made by this glory bound driverA mighty debt is owed to him by every survivor
And that includes a truck that would carry on his nameThe one called Texas Red in the Truckers Hall of Fame
