STAND OR FALL a drive by poem by Flyrod

There are things we don’t make in America anymore
So much competition comes from offshore

Such is the fate of an automobile great
The one that they called the Rocket 88

It was an Oldsmobile so sleek and long
With Detroit mussel you couldn’t go wrong

This is the one they called “your fathers Oldsmobile”
A backbone of steel and chrome that was real

Inspired by jets and the aerospace age
For a man in a suit it was all of the rage

Big whitewall tires gave it such class
And big V-8 power when you wanted to pass

Today so many cars all look the same
And that helped kill Oldsmobile’s fame

If an Olds and a Buick and a Chevy look the same
You might as well call them all the same name

When things all went bust in two thousand eight
Eminent bankruptcy sealed its fate

If you don’t stand for something you surely will fall
That’s a lesson to learn for one and for all

The name’s Flyrod. American car culture is my thing. If it rolls, roars, or rumbles I’m into it. Statistics and facts aren’t my gig. My mission is to track down and capture the infamous rides that make up pop culture, and to tell their stories.

You’re right about car design becoming bland, there is a distinct lack of chrome nowadays. Love the image and the poem.

  • I read an article lately called the ten ugliest cars of the fifties, and this was one of them. It’s the only 58 Olds I recall ever seeing. They are rare and hard to find. This one was all original but looks way better in the photo than in real life. Good chrome though, and that means something to whoever ends up restoring this one. Thanks for the comment.

“If you don’t stand for something you surely will fall” too bad most don’t see that earlier (some never at all) in life so some things that are good are not lost. Great work to come back with flyrod. You were missed.

  • Well Paul I’ve had a few medical issues. You know, the old 100,000 mile service. I had a valve job and replaced the tires and got new headlights. I shoud be good for at least another 25,000 miles. Missed you guys too.
