SHE TOOK ME FOR A RIDE a drive by poem by Flyrod

When I first peered through that showroom glass
I knew she was all about grace and class

When they made her they broke the mold
This elegant model of black and gold

The perfect blend of long clean lines
Like a red-carpet model dressed to the nines

An attraction sparked by pure desire
A symbol of status I must acquire

The object of so many stares and grins
She had those long and graceful fins

Her surface aglow with luster and sheen
She was a car that was built to be seen

She touched the ground with wheels of gold
In elegant style, that’s how she rolled

Under her hood a legendary Hemi V-8
With that kind of power I’d never be late

An instant cure for one who was bored
Now I would surely be so adored

How great to have everything I want
That DeSoto car I’d readily flaunt

They always say, “easy come easy go”
The thrill was short lived, how would I know

Life was so grand, at least for a while
In three years time she would be out of style

I guess you could say, “she took me for a ride”
I made the last payment and swallowed my pride

An idiot defined makes the same mistake twice
But oh…Wouldn’t that brand new Lincoln be nice?

The name’s Flyrod. American car culture is my thing. If it rolls, roars, or rumbles I’m into it. Statistics and facts aren’t my gig. My mission is to track down and capture the infamous rides that make up pop culture, and to tell their stories.

Overcast skys present challenges when photographing cars in outdoor settings. In Photoshop>Image>Adjustments>Shadows and Highlight the image can be opened up and balanced. Additionally, I did significant painting and retouching to clean-up unwanted surface reflections. The red in the background is done in Filter>Render>Lighting Effects.

Stunning car, did it really go out of fashion that quickly, a real shame. Another great piece of work.

  • This was leading edge design in 1956. As is often the case with cars, the new design is slightly modified for a couple of years after the original, and the look gets busier and more complex. Only 960 of these were made and thay are rare. This is a unrestored car in amazing condition. The last DeSoto was produced in 1960. There is no finer example of a fifties American car in my opinion.

Really beautiful back then, even annodized wheel covers to complete the dressing! Great work on this, your conversion really glows!

  • As you well know Bill, car shows are like a treasure hunt, you never know when you will strike gold. This was a small show, but I doubt if I will see one of these any time soon. I don’t think there was ever a time where cars evolved as much as they did between 56 and 60. Then by 1970 design entered the dark ages and stayed there until only recently. Thanks as always my friend.
