FUCHSIA MANUSHIA a drive-by poem by Flyrod
We’re all seventeen and going nowhere
Fuchsia Manusha means we haven’t got a care
In a T-Bucket roadster with a bitchin’ V-8
Fuchsia Manushia means we can’t wait
To kick up some sand at Doheny Beach
Fuchsia Manushia means Daddy don’t preach
We’re a teenage nation just out to have fun
Fuchsia Manushia, we’ll show ‘em how it’s done
Frankie and Annette playing Beach Blanket Bingo
Fuchsia Manushia is the surfin’ cats lingo
Dick Dale’s playing his Fender guitar
Fuchsia Manushia let’s head for the bar.
Rum and tequila with plenty of lime
Fuchsia manushia means it’s party time
Bikini clad honeys are everywhere
Fuchsia Manushia you had to be there
A Beach Boys band was rocking on the dunes
Fuchsia Manushia means California tunes
Rat Fink was driving a super stock Ford
Fuchsia Manushia we’ll never get bored
A crazy little chimp played bongos with his feet
Fuchsia Manushia can you dig that surfin’ beat
Moon Doggy raced his little surfin’ woody
Fuchsia Manushia it’s an oldie but a goodie
We’ll build a bonfire when the stars come out
Fuchsia Manushia makes you scream and shout
We’re all seventeen and going nowhere
Fuchsia Manusha means we haven’t got a care

I made several attempts to do something with this hot rod over the last six months but it never came together. I wanted to do a story inspired by the early sixties surfing and California beach culture that was characterized in Frankie and Annette movies like Beach Party and Beach Blanket Bingo, but I couldn’t pull it all together. A couple weeks ago I did a posting called “Praise the Lowered” where I used colorful background patterns to reinforce the theme of Low Rider culture. I thought that might work here with patterns influenced by Hawaiian shirts and beach apparel. I started with a bright red pattered background and I liked how that worked, but I wasn’t sure the color was right. So I asked my wife (she designs jewelry and has a great color sense) and she said, “Why don’t you make the background Fuchsia? That would look more like a party shirt.” Bingo! That was the perfect color against the lime green car and a minute later the words Fuchsia Manushia popped into my head and the poem just rolled into my keyboard and it all came together. Sometimes a second opinion goes a long ways.
Well… The popups in your head certainly aren’t ‘spam’. Superior work, sir!
I like your sense of humor John. Thanks.
