THE SILVER ARROW a Drive-by Poem by Flyrod

A Silver Arrow car rises from the past
The day it was born, its legend was cast

Nineteen thirty three was the year of it’s birth.
Ten thousand dollars is what it was worth.

To the big New York Auto Show it came
The critiques declared it was destined for fame

Styled to seduce the economic elite
The Depression ahead would bring its defeat

Back in the day they made only five
At the present time only three still survive

Called a masterpiece of Art Deco Design
With elegant detail and graceful line

One hundred fifteen miles per hour
A car with stature and plenty of power

One has immerged and recently sold
Two million dollars the price I was told

Only Pierce Arrow could make such a car
The public continues to make it a star

From the Harrah’s collection it was restored
Over the decades its legend has soared

For beauty and grace it stands alone
An automobile in a class of its own

The name’s Flyrod. American car culture is my thing. If it rolls, roars, or rumbles I’m into it. Statistics and facts aren’t my gig. My mission is to track down and capture the infamous rides that make up pop culture, and to tell their stories.

Image from the 2012 Scottsdale Barret Jackson Auto Auction.

One of the limitations in photographing classic cars is that you rarely find them in ideal lighting. When it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity you have to take what you get and make the best of it. I shot this car at ISO 6400 with poor tungsten light and no tripod. The Canon 5D is well suited to this kind of challenge, but it took considerable cloning and painting in Photoshop to pull this together. Sometimes you don’t need all the details to make a great image. In this case I think having the car in the shadows creates a mood and makes the image more interesting.
