A FOUR-CENT STAMP AND A HAND WRITTEN LETTER
A Drive-by Poem by Flyrod

A four-cent stamp and a hand written letter
Words from my baby that made me feel better

Every afternoon at quarter till three
I’d walk to the mailbox waiting to see

Over the hill you could hear him coming
Through a cloud of dust that engine was humming

A big Buick Eight and a sack full of mail
Always on time he was blazing the trail

A flyer and the Saturday Evening Post
But it was a letter I wanted the most

Hey Mister Carrier what did you bring?
A card or a letter would be just the thing

A hand written note to make me feel better
The joy I would feel when she wrote me a letter

The old mailbox on a dirt country road
Where the grass grew tall and the little creek flowed

I remember it now like it was yesterday
My link to the world that seemed far away

The name’s Flyrod. American car culture is my thing. If it rolls, roars, or rumbles I’m into it. Statistics and facts aren’t my gig. My mission is to track down and capture the infamous rides that make up pop culture, and to tell their stories.

How times have changed. Thanks for the nostalgia and beautiful compositional photo.

  • It sure is easier to say what’s on you mind these days isn’t it Paul. I grew up on a farm in Missouri and as a kid I would walk down a quarter mile lane from our house to get the mail. I prefer my broadband connection.

Those were the days! It’s a lot easier and faster now, but I did love those hand-written letters.

  • Yes Dot, some parts of the good old days were good in name only. Nostalgia is selective memory for the most part.

So, this one has moved up the list to my most favorite of your work. Love love love Buicks!

  • It!s hard to predict what people will like. This Buick was a subtle green color and original in every aspect. I agree with you on the love for Buick’s, especially late thirties through early fifties.
