In 1950 the small town of Lake Cloud Minnesota had a silver lining named Greta Olsen, a farmers daughter whose only monogamous relationship was with her car, a 1948 Chevrolet Fleetline. The tall twenty two year old fair skinned blond could turn heads faster than a tennis match between Bjorn Borg and Jimmy Connors. Back in the fifties there were only two ways for a girl like Greta to get out of a small town like St. Cloud, a fast car or a rich man. Greta saw no reason to deny herself of either.
Greta had a love for all things red, especially her dresser drawer full of Elizabeth Arden Lipsticks. She had every shade including Red Feather, Radiant Peony, Crimson Lilac, and Paradise Pink. But when Greta wanted to turn up the heat she always reached for a saturated hue known as “Stop” Red, an ironic choice for a woman who rarely applied the term to either her car or her men.
When Greta went shopping for her car she was disappointed to learn that the selection of colors wasn’t quite as extensive as what she was accustomed to when buying make-up at the cosmetics counter in Dayton’s Department Store. For a woman who was unaccustomed to settling for the standard fare there was only one solution to Greta’s dilemma, and that would require a visit to Anderson’s Body Shop.
You should have seen the place when the Scandinavian bombshell in the tight red skirt and partially buttoned white silk blouse strolled into the garage with her hips swinging like a well-oiled pair of saloon doors. Lug nuts dropped and every dipstick in the building pointed north when she uttered the words “I’m looking for some body work”. Three guys knocked over a cabinet of socket wrenches in a dash to grant the goddess her wish. The woman knew what she wanted and she reached into her handbag and turns the base of a lipstick case that housed the scarlet shade that she favored. “Match this color and paint it on that automobile and we can do business” she said with confidence. Two week later Greta and the Chevy Sedan were seen on Highway 41 East heading for Minneapolis where in a mater of month she would marry a wealthy man named Red Anderson. He would be the first of seven husbands who all made sure this woman’s material possessions were red and that her bank account was in the black.
Now that my friends, is how the first red Chevrolet was born.

The car was shot in natural sunlight at a car show. The original color was aqua with pearl white. I shifted the hue to red and increased the saturation to get the bright color. Because white is a neutral so it stayed the same. The chrome on the car had a lot of blue reflections from the sky, which turned orange when I did the hue shift. I went into selective color under applications and decreased the yellow and increased the magenta. This changed the chrome reflection to a rose color that married nicely to the background. The ground under the car is the asphalt it was photographed on with a cooler gray that also happened when I did the hue shift on the car. A zoom blur was added to give a sense of motion. I created a mask for the headlights and made them brighter, and then I added an outer glow. I Googled “Taillight” and found a picture from a parts store online that I dropped into a mask of the turn signal. I added an outer glow to it as well.
