PREDATORY LENDER _a drive-by poem by Flyrod

When your pockets are empty and you need legal tender
You’ll fall in the trap of the predatory lender

The rent’s coming due and you need a loan
Interest is high, so don’t piss and moan

No credit you’ve got to your sorry ass name
Now you’re gonna pay and no one’s to blame

In comes the slumlord to bail you out
His gold tooth and Rolex he flashes about

A roll of one hundreds he pulls from his suit
Pay it back when it’s due or you’ll get the boot

He’ll get you a car for five percent down
With thirty percent interest you’re sure to drown

He knows you’re a slacker and you aint got jack
When you miss that payment he takes it all back

You got no green card to cash that paycheck
He’s your only choice you pitiful wreck

A payday loan is just what you need
Cause you got a wife and two kids to feed

That big Cadillac is coming around
That money and interest had better be found

A goon with a club in the passenger seat
A real mean-ass mother you don’t want to meet

He knocks on the door you pretend you’re not there
The goon kicks it in and straps you in a chair

He says, “where’s the cash”, and you start to cry
He points to the window, “now you’re gonna die”

A splat on the sidewalk that used to be you
A debt written off with no further ado

Shot with a Canon 5D Mark 2.

The name’s Flyrod. American car culture is my thing. If it rolls, roars, or rumbles I’m into it. Statistics and facts aren’t my gig. My mission is to track down and capture the infamous rides that make up pop culture, and to tell their stories.

There’s a trend in car restoration where builders are using flat finishes and drab colors. That’s a real opportunity for a photographer who does composite work because you don’t have al the reflections that tend to not blend with new surroundings. I shot the background in New York City a couple of weeks ago. The steam coming up from the street looked like a good opportunity. I added a lens flare behind the car which really helped simplify the image, and on one of the buildings on the right side. I changed the perspective on the buildings to point more upwards, and tilted the overall composition to create more diagonal lines so the piece would have more tension. I added a old billboard to the side of a truck behind the car on the left to make the surrounding match to the date of the car. I added the manhole cover from my archive.

    Drive safely.

Nice! You are right about flat paint…aka “satin” as the rodders say. This composition is really period. The Caddy just looks like it’s “been around!”

  • Thanks Bill
