The name’s Flyrod. American car culture is my thing. If it rolls, roars, or rumbles I’m into it. Statistics and facts aren’t my gig. My mission is to track down and capture the infamous rides that make up pop culture, and to tell their stories.

    I’m a radioactive ethanol user
In a Mercury Montclair Turnpike Cruiser

The taillights look like a lazar gun
It’s got a V8 engine that’s powered by the Sun

My girlfriend is a robot from Planet Mars
She’s got a thing for guys who drive ‘58 cars

We live in a house in Space Needle City
With a dog named Droid and a saber-tooth kitty

We like to eat out at the Atomic Diner
Were the radiated food couldn’t taste finer

The nuclear cheese steak is really the bomb!
As they call out your number on the intercom

When it feels like things have gone helter-skelter
We watch TV in our fallout shelter

George and Judy Jetson are our new best friends
And LOOK magazine keeps us up on the trends

I work at a plant that builds light sockets
For supersonic jets and big space rockets

Turn the radio on and let the Rock-n-Roll blast
We called it the future and now it’s in the past

Ah, 1958 – it was a very good year! Another blast from the past and a terrific poem to go with it!

  • Monnie, Thanks for weighing in. I appreciate the feedback. Those 58’s are special. Nothing before or after was quite like them.

Isn’t that the truth of it FlyRod – Future’s in the Past while the Present is Hopeless – Ha! Down With Ethanol!!! When U start burning food for power (unnecessarily I might add) millions will starve to death – when a simple pipeline for homegrown oil is all that’s needed – - – Sorry FlyRod old chum – just got carried away with the realities released in your poem – Good Job – Good Pix – - – We just had a vote here at the clubhouse and everybody thinks Ur Tops!!! ~:0) VivaChas!

I spent many hours in my grandparents ’58 Merc, so this brings back many happy memories. Excellent work, flyrod!

  • Well lucky you. My parents had a 54 Plymouth, the ugliest car ever made. Thanks for weighing in. I appreciate the feedback Gordon.
