I have always been afraid of pastels as a drawing material. I thought it was something that wouldn’t give me control. But the last months I started feeling attracted to those beautiful boxes filled up with amazing colours. Last week I ordered a box of new drawing materials and I also ordered a box of pastels. Live dangerously, I always say. This is my first complete drawing with pastels. The partial self-portrait in ‘When the light goes out’ was actually the first. Flamenco? God, I love flamenco. Maybe because I move around earth with the grace of a lump of concrete.

it’s good to step out of our comfort zones sometimes – its what challenges us and makes us feel alive – and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t – this definitely works – i love it!! i love the movement – it is graceful yet somehow erotic and sexy – the body language is wonderful – i love the colours but again i am intrigued as to why you picked up a certain colour and used it – your pictures always make me enquire and i love them for that.

You really did well on this FlyBoy! It’s great to push our limits and grow. I personally haven’t tried pastels but I’d like to. Great movement in your work here, I’m very impressed. Can’t wait to see the next one which I’ll bet you’re already working on right? Your story cracked me up too haha!

@Deborah: Thanks for your thoughtful comment. Yes, I am glad I did it, because I love this material. It is more sculpturing than drawing. And it gives me the freedom to flow and express myself. Wow. Good stuff, those pastels. Flamengo is about passion, love and erotic. That’s why I used the yellow and red.

Great work Flyboy, great use of colors and movement. It’s funny what you said because I sometimes feel that way about pastels, the weird thing is that most of us used crayons while growing up, so you would think that pastels would be the least intimidating medium :D …… again, Great job !

Thanks a lot Funky. Interesting what you say there. You are right. Weird indeed. Well, fear is not a logical thing, is it?

Ah those art supplies arrived….. I like this alot. Its very hard to do a self portrait of one self doing flamengo. I do love pastels, you can get an amazing brillance of color in them and can work so quickly.
