When the light goes out
How did they call it in the Bible? A dale of deep darkness. I walk along the path of my life and the light goes out, the inspiration leaves, the inner voice silences, the passion extinguishes, the energy runs low. Life is like wading through a swamp that almost swallows me completely. I can hardly breathe. It gets darker and darker and I feel fear burning like a ball of fire in my stomach. I am afraid I am doomed, did everything wrong. The light disappears completely. I wonder what is left. Well, I am still there, in a terrible state of mind, but still there. My heart pumps, my lungs breathe. I am still alive. And now it all seems a little bit different. The light is not gone; it is just harder to reach it. But it is there, always there. Still feel frightened, but I have faith again.

And now it is time to learn the cockpit flows of the Airbus A320 by head and do some serious flying. It can’t always be fun.

Martin Derksema
Thanks Ruth, but still I wish I had a flash light.

Faith is believing in the unseen. God Bless You!
Martin Derksema
I agree, but this was an example of my sense of humour that , mostly, only I have to laugh about. God bless you too!

First I read your text. You are a great writer and your words went straight to my heart. You are so gifted, never lose the light.
Then I gasped at your extremely powerful image. The colours, the expression and the layers, it all comes together in a big explosion of light conquering the darkness.
I love it. You did a great job.
Martin Derksema
Wow, MaryO … marry me! You understand me so well. You should be my muse.
madvlad
hey you can make them your self i print them up on my computer with the special 9 by 12 iron on sheet reverse the design and there you are if you wash them on cool water they last as long as your shirt will
Martin Derksema
Thanks for this advise.
MBTshirts
Your image conveys so much emotion. The fear in the eyes, the thorns and harsh unforgiving angles, the areas of all consuming darkness and then there’s the light. The colours work so well together creating interest and the shadows and highlights combine to make a well composed image.
BLYTHART
I like the symbolism.
Marilyn Brown
I think that MBTshirts person said it all for me. Well done on a great image!
Martin Derksema
Thanks so much, MBTshirts for really looking at it and giving it so much thought. You give me a great nergy boost.
Martin Derksema

This is heavy and scary stuff. But if you close your eyes and turn around you will breath that clean yellow air. It reminds me a few night ago we were fighting bush fires and afterwards losing our way in pitch dark, crawling through thick thorn bushes up the mountain with only a small headlight. Eventually, near despair, we reached safety.
Martin Derksema
Thanks Dorothy for your thoughtful comment. That must have been a scary adventure with the bush fires and losing your way. Glad you made it home safely. Thanks also for appealing to the faith part of the story!
madvlad

This’ll be something you can relate to I guess … these are some of the feelings I had before I made my first solo in a Cessna 172. I was convinced that I would crash and burn and die … (of course, I didn’t, and the plane actually flew OVER the fence and made it to the runway). But hte feelings of darkness and foreboding, especially when you’re first trying to cram your head with facts and figures and procedures.
Elaine van Dyk
Fabulous imagary, FlyBoy! I don’t know how I missed commenting on this one before…......it’s really good to see the words that go with your image too.
Martin Derksema
@ WorldVision: thanks for your comment. I can imagine the first solo must be a nerve wrecking experience. If in the simulator I am flying the first take-offs and landings with an aircraft type that is new to me, my mind almost blocks because of all the fact and figures I try to recollect.
Martin Derksema
@ Whirligig: Thanks a lot!
Deborah Parkin
this is wonderful – the eyes are so intense, frightened and captivating – the thorns over the mouth is so suffocating and claustraphobic – it takes your breath away. The colours are rich and intense – the purple makes me think gothic, dark yet the yellow is a colour i always associate with happiness – full of contradictions – just like human nature – anyway, a wonderful work of art.
Martin Derksema
Thanks for your generous support, Deborah. Your words mean a lot to me.
