A Clockwork Red by

I am forever inspired by the visual beauty of Kubrick films. This is a graphic take on the brilliant ‘future-shock vision’ film A Clockwork Orange, in which the protagonist Alex is given shock therapy to prevent him from enjoying the crimes he commits. After the treatment is complete, whenever Alex has evil or malicious thoughts, he feels like throwing up.

Perhaps this is how we should treat the purveyors of contemporary evils?

    Yes, a lovely interpretation.

I think you need the fray the edges of the vomit so that you aren’t as clearly up against the edges of the template. It does mean less vomit though.

  • Thanks for the feedback sjem.
I have reduced the size of the artwork so the edges do not crop it at all. Do you think this resolves the problem? Or should I further distort/ fray the edges to emphasize ‘degradation’ of society?

    Nice one Frank.
    I like the colours too.

  • Thanks. The green represents humanity and the environment, it is also the colour cartoon characters’ faces turn when they need to throw up! The red is obviously about blood and internal bleeding.

    Yes. This works.

  • Thanks for the inspiration. I am going to have a crack at revisiting the type by hand, I think it might make the vomit flow a bit better.

Yes, I am a big fan of hand drawn type. You should enter it into Natalie Tyler’s typography group challenge then.

  • I am going to do just that! Thanks

Strong work Frank, I like this a lot. This looks to me like somebody ranting with rage rather than vomiting – either way works really well though.

  • Thanks for the constructive feedback. I am hoping to hand draw the text and make it look more like vomit…see how we go!

  • I have also added shoulders to the figure, do you think this makes it more like a vomit now? Be honest!

    sweet design

  • Glad you like it! Dunno if I’s use the term ‘sweet’ to describe vomit, but you never know, it might have a lot of carrot in it!!
