During our stay in Portugal, we took a little day trip to Aveiro, about an hour on the train from Porto. I have read that Aveiro was once a great sea port, wealthy from salt and cod fishing. Storms silted the harbour in the 16th century, which resulted in a rapid vanishing of the industry, and wealth. It has been built up again, and is a site of modern industry, as well as a university. When we visited Aveiro, it was a quiet, drizzly Monday, with few people out and about.
