Ink fineliner on paper

August 2009

“When Mr Hippo was not chasing the local river fishermen, he enjoyed growing herbs for the organic produce market.”

Inspired by a book about herb gardening, a conversation about hippos, and a Beatrix Potter story or three… And a fascinating documentary about hippos killing humans.

This is gorgeous. You have a real knack for pen & ink. I love the line-work in this drawing.
What a contrary sort of hippo he is! He appears harmless and innocent, working in his little herb garden, but all the while he could be thinking about crushing fishermen with his giant molars.

  • hehe thanks! Yeah, I remember a couple of years ago getting to look at a pygmy hippo skull close up at a zoo. We were allowed to touch it. The teeth were massive and sharp. For the first time, I realised these were rather scary animals…

Ahhhh. Wind in the willows Hippo style. Fantastic details

  • hehe thank you :-)

funnily enough just yesterday I borrowed a big hardcover Wind in the Willows from the library, with the original E. H. Shepard drawings. Of course he’s the guy that illustrated Winnie the Pooh, too. They just don’t make kids’ books like that anymore!

This is delightful and full of interesting details like the mouse and the bird. You’ve made Mr Hippo look so benign but under his hat he is having evil thoughts!!!! Wonderful!!

  • haha thanks so much! :D Yes, I am amused by cutesy representations of animals that are really quite dangerous!
