The church of St Mary the Virgin in Rye has had a chequered history. Sitting on top of the highest point in the town, the church was badly damaged by fire in 1377 by French invaders and was the scene in 1742 of a frightful murder. The church is at the centre of the community of Rye and is beautifully decorated inside with some amazing stain glass windows. The church holds regular religious services and festivals throughout the year.
