this painting started off as a sketch of a vase of roses i did one night when i just felt like drawing something. i NEVER draw things like that, and certainly not in a realistic style, so i was kind of surprised. the sketch stayed in a cupboard for a long time before i decided to build on it.
first came the window and the stripy wallpaper. then i gradually added more and more little elements.. the spider in the window, the candelabra, the moon, the tree and finally the distant gravestones. the cat, some extra spiders and the peeling wallpaper were added as an afterthought.
At some point i decided to put a velvet cloth on the table because the perspective of the bare wooden table i was trying to draw was slightly messed up. painting the drapes was interesting…i had a book about Leonardo Da Vinci nearby and i looked at some of the amazing studies of drapes he’d done to get ideas, but after that i basically just made it up as i went along. i finished one half of the tablecloth and was afraid to do the other half in case i ruined it!
i consider the finished result more of an excersise in shading and perspective and trying drawing new things which i’ve never drawn before than a proper painting :P not that i don’t like it, it just doesn’t really make sense. i kept adding new elements because i always felt something was missing, and now there seems to be almost too much to look at.
but i like it anyway.
