For the last 2 weeks I have opened Photoshop once ! This is a sad state of affairs for me as most of my evening for the past couple of years has been dedicated to creating the images you see in my portfolio – it’s what I do, its my creative outlet.
Two weeks ago I bought a copy of the MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role playing game) – WOW (World of Warcraft for noobs like me or should I say World of War-crack – god I’m starting to sound like a chin stroking geek already) – just to see what all the fuss is about, well…bugger it I’m now damn well hooked like a junkie and have been putting 3-4 hour sessions a night that would normally be spent editing and creating image/art. This concerns me as my photography has taken a big back seat.
Anyway, I still log into RB every day but am struggling in the grip of this massively addictive ‘time-sink’ and trying to regain a little ‘art’ time every week. So bear with me and I hope to be back in the RB fold soon.
really I CAN shake this !

Good Luck Aaron and yes… be strong ;)

i only last 5 minutes in computer games before I get bored. I guess I have too short an attention span. Maybe, one day, when we have proper virtual reality I’ll have more fun with them. Preferably just gently exploring other worlds…. e.g. Middle Earth. I’m just too boring for words huh? :)
Enjoy it while you can then get back to the more important things in life – i.e. RedBubble

I know what you mean Aaron. I am doing the same thing. (Grand theft auto 4!) But I have got a new camera and now I am making a come back!
Gary L Suddath
I have spells I play Total War….I play Age Of Empires too but that don’t last for weeks like Total War does…so I see your plight. Its good though to give part of your brain a break with something else..just remember to switch interest back

Flamejob – I know eventually you will be back to the PhotoShop Side!! The Force is Strong in You!!!
Duncan Waldron
I’m with lightsmith – I get bored just thinking about stuff like that. Really can’t be bothered, and have too much to do without wasting time. Kick it – you know you should ;-)

Yep! I played that sometime ago it was very addictive and my husband played as well and still does (Lev 70) although not as much. I relaised I wasn’t getting much done and could not afford the time spent on it. the hours would just wizz by I got to lev 30 hunter troll and in the end I was just playing the battle grounds now Ive lost my password .
It will be interesting cos now all the lev 70’s that are playing and have been playing for a while are now getting sick of it . There is a new game coming out called War Hammer an old but regiged game which sound like it might take over for a bit :). Watch all the wow servers get depopulated !In the past I have played Guild Wars, Never Winter Nights, and Unreal Tournament and gone to Lans and gone interstate to play, I think those days are over though .
Going to ta party this sat with a bunch of gamers so it will be interesting here what everyone is playing .
Looks like you might have to set yourself some limits :)) good luck with that!!
janpiller
Gheesh – what a nerd. That stuff is really addictive – Run Forrest Run!!!!!!!
Bones
Thats too funny, I have never played but know a few people who have let it take control of their loves, one guy even quit his serious job to get one at a gaming store so he could be around games all day every day…. Please don’t let this be you.
Be strong.

Ben Herman
Call of Duty 4 for me, every night (and day atm coz of school hols). can’t watch the telly, its not interactive, and processing images lasts only a few hours before i go crazy.

Help is available Aaron! Computer game addiction /computer game induced psychosis are now bona fide behavioural/psychiatric disorders. But seriously, I have a friend whose ‘issue’ mirrored yours and eventually his partner read him the riot act, and he willingly went cold turkey to save his relationship. I have a client in mental health who is a cannabis/wow addict and he’s got pizza boxes and coke cans ankle deep in his ‘bedroom!’ (He’s eagerly awaiting W/hammer too) But you’re a smart, creative type guy, and I’m sure your photographic muse will win the day – with the help of a few blows around the head from a neglected partner perhaps?
Michael Alesich
Just hook in to photocrack,
it’s great
it’s not really multiplayer,
it has many different weapons(airbrush, filters, eraser, filters, layers, filters, um, some other stuff)
there are many levels, (it has a whole option for levels alone.)
but maybe it might not be the same.

You posted “It Ends Here” 11 days ago. I thinks that this one piece of work is bordering on perfection! It is by far the best piece of work on RB (to me, anyway). I know that photography has two points, 1. the eye and 2. the process, you have enough of both to burn. Stop moaning you lucky bastard.
I too have had a “slump”, but am over coming this with a bit (lot) of red wine and a belting of Massive Attack, Pink Floyd and Led Zep. I’m starting to get “IT” back.
I have mentioned before I work in television as a director and colour grader. I am one of the graders of Collectors on ABC – thats the easy bit for me, because after an hour you just go with the flow and the pics look after themselves – the creativity has already been done for you, thats the “Eye”. When I work for myself and a customer comes to me and wants a TV commercial campaign with a corporate thrown in and you have lost your mojo, it scares the crap out of me and happens all time, thats “Eye and Process”. My solution is Gran Turisimo 4 – going around in cyber circles is quite hypnotic! Just veg, stop thinking, RESET your creativity, it’s actually a really good thing.
The first pic I posted on RB was one that I had removed (it was crap)! So to help get the mojo back – I had a shandy, cranked up iTunes and re-fiddled. It’s now called Wheel of Fortune and is going just fine!
Kathleen Cameron
man, you’re in finance… you already had the geek thing covered… this is COOL! :-)

Lol you’re not the only one. I just got myself an Xbox 360 today, I think it’s gonna rob me of MY photography drive too haha. As long as you’re having fun mate :)
DeEtta Brown
You beat to this type of writing! I have been playing for about two weeks now myself. Dark circles under the eyes, constant yawning, being completely sore from sitting in the same position for hours at a time, no artistic interest….. all signs of a WOW overdose. I’m a Night Elf Rogue :) You’ll get bored with it one day and decide to quit for a few days….it won’t work. You are sucked in my friend!
beforetheend
I too was a WOW junkie for about a week. It passed like any useless thing your life. Your creative self will reject it soon.
I recently bought Monster Hunter 2 for PSP. And I’ve hardly made time for it. It’s a self induging RPG on a massive scale. I prefer this game compared to having to log on and be sitting in front of my PC. I even tried City of Heroes once upon a time, cause I wanted a character that was similar to Superman. A week it lasted. My character floated at about 2miles an hour – thats as far as I got.
Anyway. What I’m trying to say is. I’m not much of a gamer. Every once in a while I take time out for an hour of Zelda and a little cooking channel. It’s not long before I find myself wanting to create something or write some music.
Good luck. The online world in general – is addictive.
missheels
Oh Flamejob – please detox – I love your work.
sweetscent62
I think this has to be an intervention! “Snap out of it you Geek!” : ) Nah seriously.. maybe you’ll get some ideas from the game and come back where you belong..with all us “artsy fartsy people”. : ) we promise not to be so cool… hell I’ll get some broken glasses..and stick a band-aid on it for you if you like! Coooome..Baaaaack.. ; ) Wen xox
atomikboy
Dude…..keep it real!!!!….get off that damn game.
Aaron .
Jeez, I didn’t check RB last night as I was um……..insert lame, made up excuse other than playing World of Warcraft – but man am I suprised at all the responses today – thank y’all – I plan to drag myself away from wow this weekend and get back in the creative vibe.
Wen – I would like to see you those geeky glasses !
berndt2
You gotta find a balance – but I understand the addiction: same addiction, different game(s)!
ltruskett

Michelle Avery
You better get past this one – quickly!! Na, I reckon you’ll get ‘over it’ pretty fast….art can sometimes go missing for a while but you will hear the calling and wont be able to resist.
LisaR
Maybe you need to buy yourself a new lens… always works for me :)
